The youngest Graded race staged during the Cheltenham Festival is the Mares' Chase. This Grade Two was introduced to the schedule in 2021 and Willie Mullins, who tends to dominate the mares' events at Cheltenham, has won both renewals so far.

Here's our free guide and tips for the 2023 Mares' Chase.

Mares' Chase 2023 Runners

Given her current price and record in this race, many will see Elimay as an excellent value bet. Willie Mullins' mare ran up to a fantastic RPR of 159 when finishing second to Colreevy in the inaugural running of the Mares' Chase in 2021. Elimay managed to go one better last year, despite only clocking an RPR of 146 and her performances have tailed off since.

The fact that Zambella and Pink Legend - both very capable mares on UK soil - managed to finish so close to Elimay tells me that last year's contest wasn't particularly strong and the defending champion will have a number of classy, progressive rivals to contend with this time around.

Magic Daze is a lovely jumper, but I worry whether she'll be able to see out this trip. If I was Henry De Bromhead, I'd definitely be going down the Grand Annual route.

Like Magic Daze, Riviere D'etel is much better over the minimum distance. Galia Des Liteux, on the other hand, is proven over further than this distance. Good ground, however, is a problem for Dan Skelton's runner.

Jeremy's Flame thrashed Zambella when she claimed a Listed prize at Huntingdon last month. Gavin Cromwell's nine-year-old is respected, but she could be vulnerable to the two talented novices who head this betting heat.

Mares' Chase 2023 Tips

Impervious has improved markedly for the switch to chasing, winning all three of her starts. Ciaran Murphy's mare brings a high level of form to the table - form which you could argue is better than ALLEGORIE DE VASSY'S. Yet, in terms of raw ability, Willie Mullins' mare could be in a different league to the other mares in this year's contest.

Allegorie De Vassy was the ante-post favourite for last year's Mares' Novices' Hurdle, following her victory over the erratic Brandy Love at Fairyhouse. Rich Ricci's mare was ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival through injury 12 months ago, and Allegorie De Vassy didn't make her chasing debut until the Grade Two at Limerick's Christmas Festival.

Paul Townend bounced his mare out into the lead and Allegorie De Vassy produced some fantastic early jumps. The leader landed on top of the second-last flight and got in a little tight to the last, but neither of those niggling errors halted Allegorie De Vassy's momentum, as she cantered to a 19-length success.

Willie Mullins' mare was then keen to get on with things at Thurles last time out and a wayward, corkscrewing leap at the first flight forced Townend up his mount's neck. Having recovered his irons quickly, Townend's mount continued to jump out to her right, but even a few sloppy jumps couldn't prevent Allegorie De Vassy from carrying a penalty to another Grade Two success. Brides Hill was beaten 19-length back in second at Thurles and she's since come out and won a Listed Novices' Chase, beating Tellmesomethinggirl by an easy four lengths.

Allegorie De Vassy reminds me a lot of Colreevy, who beat Elimay here in 2021. Like her former stablemate, Allegorie De Vassy has a tendency to jump right, but that didn't stop Colreevy from winning at the Cheltenham Festival before going on to defeat Monkfish and Envoi Allen at Punchestown.

I think Allegorie De Vassy is every bit as talented as Colreevy and, at the age of just six, she remains open to plenty of improvement. If she doesn't win a Grade One over fences at some stage of her career, I'll be very disappointed.

Verdict

This won't be a walk in the park for Allegorie De Vassy, but there's no doubt in my mind that she's the most talented mare in this race. If Willie Mullins' novice has improved in the jumping department since her last run at Thurles, she should take the world of beating.
