For me, this year's Arkle is a straight shoot-out between El Fabiolo and JONBON. They're easily the two best horses in this historic race and, while I respect El Fabiolo, I've pinned my colours to Nicky Henderson's novice.

Jonbon already has one up on El Fabiolo following his victory over hurdles at Aintree last season. Willie Mullins' raider was only having his second start over hurdles that day and did well to push Jonbon all the way to the line. Henderson's star went into that contest on the back of a grueling race behind Constitution Hill in the Supreme just three weeks previous, so his performance at Aintree has to be marked up too.

Since making the switch to fences, Jonbon is unbeaten in three starts. Aidan Coleman's mount jumped beautifully on soft ground to win on debut around Warwick, before registering an easy Grade One success at Sandown in December. Yes, Jonbon was workmanlike on his prep run for the Arkle at Warwick. Funny things can happen in two-horse races, though and Calico - who gave Jonbon a fright that day - has come out and won since.

Rain-softened ground would suit El Fabiolo more than Jonbon, but Henderson's star has dealt with juicy ground well in the past and, crucially, he has a good run at the Cheltenham Festival under his belt. For me, Jonbon is the one to beat!
