There are two I like in this wide-open handicap, and both currently sit on reasonably long prices. The first of those is MISTER WHITAKER, who’s last three victories have all come over course-and-distance.

Mick Channon has tried his former Northern Trust winner over three miles on a number of occasions, and he clearly doesn’t see out that trip. Adrian Heskin didn’t ask his mount many questions as they stayed on to finish fifth in the Paddy Power on New Year’s Day, and he comes into this handicap dangerously under the radar.

The other I liked at the ante-post stage was CLONDAW CASTLE, so I was delighted when his outing in the Greatwood Handicap at Newbury was cancelled due to the weather.

Following a flop in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, Tom George’s mount bounced back in the style of a very good horse at Warwick, cruising to a bloodless triumph over Two Taffs. Clondaw Castle placed fourth in last year’s Arkle, so I don’t think his limp showing here in December had anything to do with the track. Good ground would greatly enhance his chances.
