Cheltenham Festival Day Three (Pictures and Results)

Thursday's card at the Cheltenham Festival kicked off with a fantastic showdown between two of National Hunt racing's finest prospects in the Turners' Novices' Chase. Galopin Des Champs looked to have Bob Olinger well-and-truly covered approaching the final flight, only for Paul Townend's mount to stumble upon landing and hit the canvas, allowing Henry De Bromhead's challenger to come through and claim a fortuitous victory.

There was a sense of deja-vu after the two Championship races on St Patrick's Day. Allaho made all and held on comfortably to win his second Ryanair Chase, before Flooring Porter executed identical tactics and held off Thyme Hill to retain his Stayers' Hurdle crown.

It was another tricky day for punters, as outsiders landed all three of the handicaps. 25/1 shot Third Wind won the Pertemps Final for Hughie Morrison. Coole Cody continued his love affair with Cheltenham by winning the Festival Plate at 22/1. Lucy Turner then guided Chambard to victory in the Kim Muir, with Venetia Williams' winner returning an SP of 40/1.

There was a minor upset in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle too, where Harry Fry's Love Envoi claimed her fifth victory of the season, holding off Ahorsewithnoname and Grangee to win her second Grade Two.

It's safe to say that day three of the Cheltenham Festival went in favour of the bookies, thanks to some shock results this afternoon.

Ladbrokes hailed wins for Third Wind and Coole Cody as excellent results, while Bob Olinger landing the first was also a good outcome. 

The Ryanair Chase put the smile back on punters’ faces when banker of the day Allaho won in stunning fashion. The Stayers Hurdle attracted a wide spread of support, but Flooring Porter’s victory was a small loser for the bookies.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “It is safe to say that we have the upper hand heading into the final day of the festival. Punters didn’t have a huge amount to celebrate about today, with the likes of Sire Du Berlais and Imperial Alcazar letting them down the most. Allaho was obviously a very bad result and Flooring Porter wasn’t great either, but on the whole we can’t complain."
