Mares' Novices' Hurdle History

The Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle was added to the Day 3 schedule at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016. It’s open to fillies and mares who are four-year-olds or older, and two miles and a furlong will have to be scaled.

In 2019, the race was renamed in honour of Dawn Run, one of the finest mares to ever grace the sport, winner of the 1984 Champion Hurdle, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later.

Although the race has it’s detractors, one who certainly isn’t complaining is Willie Mullins. Ireland’s Champion trainer has won all five runnings of this race. His first winner, Limini was followed into the winners’ enclosure by Let’s Dance, Laurina and Eglantine Du Seuil.

In 2020, Mullins secured a 1-2 in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, as runaway winner Concertista was followed home by stablemate, Dolcita.
