Pertemps Final History

The Pertemps Final has been a popular addition to the Cheltenham Festival calendar, since it was created in 1974.

During the regular season, courses all over Britain and Ireland stage qualifying races, with a top six finish enough to book your ticket to Cheltenham.

Jane Pilkington's Willie Wumpkins is the oldest horse to ever win the race. He was 11 when he first won the Pertemps Final in 1979 and, incredibly, he went on to complete a hat-trick with further wins in 1980 and '81.

Jonjo O'Neill is the most successful trainer in the Pertemps Final, having saddled four winners between 1991 and 2013.

Many winners of the Pertemps Final go onto taste success again at the Festival in future seasons. Presenting Percy won the RSA Chase the following season. Holywell the Ultima Handicap and Forgive 'N Forget won the Gold Cup two years after his Pertemps Final success.

In 2020, Sire Du Berlais became just the third horse to successfully defend his Pertemps Final crown, holding off The Storyteller under top-weight, to give Gordon Elliott a 1-2.
