St Patrick's Day at the Cheltenham Festival kicks off with Turners Novices’ Chase. This race is one of the newest Grade Ones at the meeting, having only been created in 2011. Irish horses boast an excellent record, with stars like Sir Des Champs, Vautaur and Yorkhill helping raiders win eight of the eleven runnings.

I've taken a look through the current betting for the Turners' and picked out my best Cheltenham Festival tips.

The Top Two

Sitting happily atop the betting is the unbeaten Bob Olinger, who bolted up in last year’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. Henry De Bromhead’s star ran out a comfortable winner on his chase debut at Gowran Park. Capodanno then made the odds-on favourite work a little harder than expected in the Kildare Novices’ Hurdle, but Bob Olinger found an extra gear and was well on top as they crossed the line.

Galopin Des Champs followed victory in last year’s Martin Pipe with an effortless triumph in the three-mile Grade One for novice hurdlers at Punchestown last season. Following a flawless performance on his first chase start over Christmas, Willie Mullins’ six-year-old made all to win the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at a canter, thrashing Master McShee and Gaillard Du Mesnil to land the second Grade One of his career.

Won’t Run

I can see there being as few as six or seven runners declared in the final field for the opener on day three of the Cheltenham Festival. Willie Mullins accounts for ten of the 23 entries. Blue Lord, Saint Sam and Haut En Couleurs look certain to enter the Arkle. Capodanno is more effective over a staying trip. Stattler looks nailed on for the National Hunt Chase and I doubt whether Egality Mans or El Barra are up to Grade One standard just yet.

Bravemansgame will definitely run in the Brown Advisory Chase, as will Dusart if he isn't saved for Aintree. Neither Riviere D'etel nor Fury Road will represent Gordon Elliott in the Turners. Minella Drama, Imperial Alcazar and Busselton are more likely to run in a handicap than this Grade One.

Best Of The Rest

Venetia Williams has been having a magnificent campaign and her unbeaten chaser, L’Homme Presse travels to Cheltenham with a genuine chance. Charlie Deutsch’s mount ran out an easy winner of the Dipper over course-and-distance and jumped nicely when winning a mediocre renewal of the Grade One Scilly Isles Chase at Sandown.

Willie Mullins’ main hope could be Jungle Boogie, who has only started three races under rules. After wins in a bumper and a maiden hurdle last season, Paul Townend’s mount made a good impression on his first chase start at Fairyhouse, making all to beat several decent rivals by a wide margin.

After second and third-placed finishes in Grade Ones, Gabynako could fly the flag for Gavin Cromwell in the Turners. Willie Mullins’ still clearly thinks highly of Gaillard Du Mesnil, despite some average runs over fences this term, and he could be another who gets thrown into the Turners.

2022 Turners Novices’ Chase Best Bet – Bob Olinger

We've got an old-fashioned match race to look forward to in the Turners' Novices' Chase, as two of the sport's most exciting novice chasers go toe-to-toe. (El Barra and Busselton also run in the Turners' Novices' Chase, but they aren't in the same league as the top two.)

Last year's Martin Pipe winner, Galopin Des Champs is two-from-two over fences. Willie Mullins' star jumped beautifully on his chase debut and travels to Cheltenham on the back of another excellent win at the Dublin Racing Festival.

Despite looking every inch a three-miler, Mullins has decided to keep Galopin Des Champs over this middle distance. The Turners' is actually two furlongs shorter than the Ladbrokes Novices' Chase, which Mullins' star won at Leopardstown, and there's no doubting this shorter trip suits the speedier BOB OLINGER.

Henry De Bromhead's star motored to a superb victory in the Ballymore here at Cheltenham last year. Bob Olinger then survived a couple of hairy moments to win easily on his chase debut at Down Royal, and had to find a third gear to see off Capodanno when the two met at Punchestown last time out.

Bob Olinger's chase runs both came when Henry De Bromhead's horses were out of form, so you can forgive him a couple of underwhelming performances. Rachael Blackmore will stalk the free-going Galopin Des Champs and look to utilise his superior turn-of-foot when the two meet the rising ground.

Verdict

I'd recommend backing Bob Olinger at even-money, before Galopin Des Champs is withdrawn. I've also backed the promising Jungle Boogie each way at his current price.
