Market Leaders

Topping the betting we find Galopin Des Champs, who ended last season with a Grade One success over three miles at Punchestown. Willie Mullins’ charge has since registered two flawless displays over fences, including a Grade One triumph at the Dublin Racing Festival, where it took Paul Townend around half a mile to pull his mount up after he motored through the line.

Bravemansgame has impressed with his jumping since switching to fences. Paul Nicholls’ star ran out an impressive winner of the Kauto Star over Christmas, before producing an excellent weight-carrying display to win a handicap on his final prep-run before Cheltenham at Newbury.

On the back of an emphatic win in the John Francombe at Newbury, Ahoy Senor found himself outpaced behind Bravemansgame in the Kauto Star. Lucinda Russell’s star relished the return to a more galloping track when bouncing back to winning form in the Towton Novices’ Chase and the rigors of the Old Course at Cheltenham should suit this strong traveller perfectly.

Won’t Run

Like the Turners’ Novices’ Chase, I can see a fairly small field being declared for this Grade One. Bob Olinger, L’Homme Presse and Jungle Boogie will take up their entries in the Turner’s Novices’ Chase, whereas Stattler, Fury Road, Run Wild Fred, Vanillier, Ontheropes and Threeunderthrufive will likely be stepped up in trip and go for the National Hunt Chase.

Imperial Alcazar and Gabynako could try to exploit their handicap marks in the Paddy Power Plate. Most of the others, quite frankly, aren’t good enough to run in this Grade One on day two of the Cheltenham Festival.

The Best Of The Rest

Capodanno gave Bob Olinger a decent race when they met at Punchestown last time out and Willie Mullins’ charge will be much more effective when stepped up to this sort of trip. Beacon Edge won the Drinmore at Fairyhouse earlier in the season and he too could be stepped up to three miles for Cheltenham.

Farouk D’alene may be better going right-handed, but he did manage to win at Navan earlier in the season and ran Stattler close at Naas last time out. If the ground was to come up very soft, then he could be the best each-way shout.

Of the other British entrants, Dusart is one of the few worth mentioning and this is the only race he’ll run in if Nicky Henderson decides to send his budding star to Cheltenham. Pats Fancy could step up to Grade One company, as could Oscar Elite.

2022 Brown Advisory Chase Best Bet – Ahoy Senor

Now that Galopin Des Champs has been confirmed for the Turners, this year's Brown Advisory Novices' Chase is looking decidedly open. Bravemansgame and L'Homme Presse top the betting, ahead of a wave of Irish rivals. I'm not convinced that this is the right track for Bravemansgame, we don't know whether L'Homme Presse will stay and I'm not fully convinced by the likes of Capodanno, Gaillard Du Mesnil, Fury Road or Beacon Edge.

The one I like most is AHOY SENOR, who trashed Bravemansgame when they met in the Sefton Novices' Hurdle at Aintree last Spring.

Lucinda Russell's stable star was going well against more experienced chaser on his chase debut in the Colin Parker, before falling at the second-last. Ahoy Senor then powered to a hugely impressive victory in the John Francombe at Newbury, before finishing second to Bravemansgame in the Kauto Star.

A test of speed really suited Paul Nicholls' runner at Kempton, but the switch to Cheltenham definitely suits Ahoy Senor better and I fancy he can reverse that Grade One form. Some crabbed Ahoy Senor's jumping in the Towton Novice' Chase last time out, but I thought he jumped well on the whole and Derek Fox's mount proved his class by beating Noble Yeats easily under the burden of a penalty.

I love Ahoy Senor. I genuinely think he's a future Gold Cup challenger. Three miles around a galloping track like Cheltenham will suit Russell's budding star and he's certainly been underestimated in the market.

Verdict

Ahoy Senor is our best bet in this wide-open Grade One.
