As the rain began to pour on day two of the Cheltenham Festival, Energumene was backed into favouritism to win the Champion Chase.
Willie Mullins' star had won the Queen Mother Champion Chase on similar ground 12 months previous. Following a defeat in the Clarence House Chase, the defending champion could have been backed at 5/2 to retain his crown, but a deluge of support on the day of the race saw Energumene go off as the 5/4 favourite.
Edwardstone sat second in the betting, just ahead of Editeur Du Gite, who has beaten both Edwardstone and Energumene in the Clarence House. Captain Guinness, Nube Negra and Greaneteen also took their chance, along with last year's surprise runner-up, Funambule Sivola.

Editeur Du Gite tried to make the running, like he did in the Clarence House Chase, but Gary Moore's charge had more competition for the lead this time around. Paul Townend had Energumene up with the pace from an early stage, with Nube Negra and Captain Guinness positioned just behind.
Tom Cannon had Edwardstone in touch with the leaders early on, but Alan King's star never found a rhythm. As the pace began to pick up at the top of the hill, Edwardstone began to fall away as Paul Townend pushed the defending champion into the lead.
Energumene quickly established a lead on the approach to the final flight. Captain Guinness stayed on past Editeur Du Gite to try and challenge the favourite, but Energumene wasn't for catching and Willie Mullins' star cantered to an emphatic success.
Captain Guinness ran a blinder to finish second, ahead of Greaneteen, who nipped in ahead of Editeur Du Gite to finish third, but this race was all about Energumene, who joined the elite club of two-time Champion Chase winners.
