Having reached 99 Cheltenham Festival winners earlier in the day, Willie Mullins went into the 2024 Champion Chase hoping El Fabiolo would bring up his century at this most famous of meetings.
El Fabiolo was cut into odds-on for the Champion Chase following an easy win in the Dublin Chase at Leopardstown. Jonbon was the big British hope in this year's race, but he was withdrawn from the contest by Nicky Henderson, having contracted the bug that seems to be sweeping through his Seven Barrows stable.
Edwardstone, who was beaten 64 lengths behind Energumene the previous year, sat second in the betting. Captain Guinness was attempting to build on the runner-up finish he registered 12 months ago. Gentleman De Mee, Elixir De Nutz and Funambule Sivola completed the line-up.

2nd | Gentleman De Mee | 16/1 |
3rd | Funambule Sivola | 100/1 |
Edwardstone utilised front-running tactics for the first time when bolting up in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, and Tom Cannon was keen to ride his mount positively again. Freddie Gingell won the Clarence House Chase from the front aboard Elixir De Nutz and they helped Edwardstone make the running.
El Fabiolo stretched at the opening obstacles and wasn't particularly fluent at the third, and Paul Townend's mount looked a little lit up coming out of the home straight. The favourite then hit the fourth fence hard, dragging his back legs through the obstacle and El Fabiolo was swiftly pulled up by Paul Townend.
With the race now up for grabs, Tom Cannon opened up a lead on Edwardstone. Rachael Blackmore moved Captain Guinness forward approaching the third-last, as Elixir De Nutz began to struggle. Funambule Sivola simply couldn't keep up, but Mark Walsh still sat happily aboard Gentleman De Mee at the rear.
Turning for home, Edwardstone cried enough and Captain Guinness forged into the lead. Gentleman De Mee attempted to make inroads after the last and Captain Guinness gave him a chance by hanging right in the closing stages. Yet, Rachael Blackmore's mount had a little left in the tank and held on to claim a famous victory.
Edwardstone fell after a tired jump at the last and Freddie Gingell pulled Elixir De Nutz a long way from home. Funaumble Sivola cantered over the line to finish third, without ever being put into the race.
Henry De Bromhead celebrated a fourth victory in the Queen Mother, as the bookmakers breathed a sigh of relief. Paul Townend rode El Fabiolo back into the paddock and Willie Mullins was forced to wait for his 100th winner at the Cheltenham Festival.
