Cheltenham Day 2 Tips - Wednesday 15th March 2023

Race 1 - Ballymore Tips

Of the leading contenders in this year's Ballymore, IMPAIRE ET PASSE'S form is arguably the weakest, having only won a fairly average maiden before beating two mares in the Moscow Flyer.

Visually, Willie Mullins' five-year-old is a fantastic specimen. Impaire Et Passe barely broke into a sweat during either of those victories and jumped beautifully on both occasions. The ground has been soft or heavy on each of the three occasions that Impaire Et Passe as run and Mullins is confident that his five-year-old will be even more effective over this distance.

No horse came out of the preview evening circuit with more positive mentions than Impaire Et Passe. Everyone with any sort of connection to Willie Mullins' yard put Townend's mount up as the most likely Ballymore winner. I'm more than happy to take them at their word.

Race 2 - Brown Advisory Tips

Now that the ground has eased to soft at Cheltenham racecourse, GERRI COLOMBE'S already strong claims in the Brown Advisory have grown even stronger still.

Gerri Colombe is unbeaten in point-to-points, bumpers, over hurdles and now in three starts over fences. Gordon Elliott's charge travels to Cheltenham on the back of two Grade One victories, including a hard-fought triumph at Sandown on ground which was quicker than ideal. There's plenty more to come from this talented seven-year-old and I can't wait to see what Gerri Colombe can do over this extended trip.
A positive mention has to be given to THUNDER ROCK, who chased Gerri Colombe home when third in the Scilly Isles at Sandown. Olly Murphy's charge stayed on well after getting outpaced at Sandown, having done the same in the Dipper the previous month. This step up to three miles should suit and slower ground should help with Thunder Rock's sometimes sticky jumping.

Race 3 - Coral Cup Tips

I don't have many strong fancies in this typically tricky renewal of the Coral Cup. The exceptionally well-handicapped Camprond makes it into the final field, but the ground went against the favourite last year and it's set to come up soft again this week.

HMS SEAHORSE ran well when fourth in last year's Boodles and went on to place third behind Vauban in the Grade One juvenile hurdle at Punchestown.

Paul Nolan identified the Coral Cup as the target for HMS Seahorse immediately after that impressive victory at Navan back in January and I don't think Sean O'Keeffe's mount has been treated unfairly by the British handicapper.
At the ante-post stage, I picked out BEACON EDGE at a much longer price. Noel Meade's nine-year-old beat Fury Road in a Grade Two on heavy ground back in 2021, before going on to run a blinder when fourth in that year's renewal of the Stayers' Hurdle.

Despite winning a Grade One over fences last year, Beacon Edge never seemed comfortable over the larger obstacles. Meade's charge returned to something like his best form when third behind Blazing Khal in the Boyne Hurdle last time out and Michael O'Sullivan comes in to take three-pounds off Beacon Edge's back.

Race 4 - Champion Chase Tips

Like last year, ground conditions will favour Energumene and I expect we'll see a much better version of the defending champion than the one that was well beaten in the Clarence House. That being said, EDWARDSTONE has to be given an enormous amount of credit for his effort that day and, under a slightly more positive ride from Tom Cannon, last year's Arkle winner will be hard to beat.

Following a sparkling victory in the Tingle Creek on his reappearance, Edwardstone fell early on at Kempton over Christmas. Cannon then gave Alan King's nine-year-old a cautious ride in the Clarence House and Edwardstone didn't jump well early on. Coming down the hill, King's star surged into contention and looked ready to pick off Editeur Du Gite jumping the last, only for the leader to get back up under the shadow of the post and claim a surprise victory.

Edwardstone used up plenty of energy to get into contention from off the pace in the Clarence House. He was also lame for a couple of days after that run, which could help explain away that disappointing finishing effort. Edwardstone boasts an excellent record around Cheltenham and many of his best performances have come on soft ground. He'll be my selection in this year's Champion Chase.

Race 5 - Cross Country Tips

DELTA WORK has every chance of retaining his Cross Country Chase crown. Gordon Elliott's star upset Tiger Roll to win this race 12 months ago and has only enhanced his claims in the interim. Galvin would be a big danger on decent ground, but the going on Wednesday will certainly favour Delta Work and any price better than Evens should be snapped up.
To make this contest a little more interesting, I've also had a small each-way bet on PLAN OF ATTACK. Henry de Bromhead's nine-year-old won the race for third place here at Cheltenham 12 months ago and should improve for that return run in the Cross Country Handicap on Trials Day, where Darragh O'Keeffe's mount was outpaced throughout on good ground. 40/1 is too big a price, especially if your bookie is offering enhanced place terms.

Race 6 - Grand Annual Tips

All of the big guns at the top of the weights have stood their ground in the Grand Annual. Just 16 pounds separate the entire field, meaning fancied runners like Unexpected Party, Saint Segal and Red Rookie haven't made the cut.

Gavin Cromwell has worked his usual magic with FINAL ORDERS, helping his seven-year-old rise from 120 up to 149 in the weights since he started out over fences in the autumn.

Final Orders claimed his fifth victory in a row at the Dublin Racing Festival last month, where he was very good value for the four-length winning margin. The British handicapper has only upped his mark by a pound up to 150 and Final Orders' progression shows no signs of slowing down.
I'd be hopeful of a better run from ELIXIR DE NUTZ, who was a little too keen in this race 12 months ago and didn't get home on bottomless ground.

Joe Tizzard's nine-year-old brings some excellent form into the Grand Annual, having thrashed a future winner in Galahad Quest at Wincanton in January, before a runner-up finish in the Grade Two Game Spirit Chase at Newbury last time out. Elixir De Nutz will have to carry more weight than he did 12 months ago, but he's clearly in excellent form and could be open to further improvement.

Race 7 - Champion Bumper Tips

Given his outstanding record in this contest, and the fact that he'll saddle almost half of the field, Willie Mullins is long odds-on to win yet another Champion Bumper.

Of his ten-strong team, the one I like the most is FACT OR FILE, who should relish this stronger test of stamina. Mullins' six-year-old beat Irish Panther in a 20-furlong bumper at Leopardstown over Christmas, before losing out to A Dream To Share on quicker ground at the Dublin Racing Festival. The top two pulled a long way clear of the chasing pack that day and Fact Or File could reverse that form with the favourite, given ground conditions have swung in his favour.
At a longer price, I'm also going to back WESTERN DIEGO, who was snapped up by Clipper Logistics following an impressive point-to-point triumph last January.

On his debut under rules for Willie Mullins, Western Diego ran out a dominant winner of a bumper at Naas in January, showing a good turn-of-foot to put the race to bed, having made all of the running. There's tons of stamina and a liking for soft ground in this horse's pedigree. He'll be the last of my Cheltenham Festival day two tips at a tempting each-way price.
