The weather gods played a cruel trick on the patrons of Prestbury Park on day two of the Cheltenham Festival. The going, which began at good-to-soft, soft in places, soon turned to heavy as a deluge of rain arrived on Wednesday afternoon.

Paul Nicholls withdrew several of his runners, including Bravemansgame. Nicky Henderson opted to run Shishkin in the Champion Chase, but it was evident right from the off that the favourite hated the ground and Shishkin was pulled up by Nico De Boinville at the half-way stage.

Shishkin's no-show opened the door for Energumene. Paul Townend's mount powered to an impressive victory, leaving Willie Mullins celebrating his first Champion Chase victory alongside delighted owner, Tony Bloom.

Mullins enjoyed a double on day two. Sir Gerhard ran out an easy winner of the Ballymore, before Facile Vega enhanced his growing reputation with a fine victory in the Champion Bumper.

Gordon Elliott got off the mark for the week as 50/1 shot Commander Of Fleet won the Coral Cup. Tiger Roll's retirement party was then spoiled by stablemate Delta Work, who pipped the five-time Cheltenham Festival winner to the post in what will be his final outing on a racetrack.

Britain celebrated two winners on the afternoon. L'Homme Presse was backed into favouritism ahead of the Brown Advisory Chase and ran out an impressive winner. Ben Pauling then celebrated his third Cheltenham Festival victory, as Global Citizen made all to land the Grand Annual.

Two days in and it is all square between the bookmakers and punters at the Cheltenham Festival, according to Ladbrokes.

Day One went to the punters, but with Shishkin being pulled up in the Champion Chase and Tiger Roll finishing second in the Cross Country, Ladbrokes say the bookies came out on top today.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “Punters got off to a cracker this afternoon with the first two favourites coming in. However, the rain came down and washed away smiles, with 50/1 shot Commander of Fleet taking the Coral Cup.

"Getting Shishkin beat in the Champion Chase was the biggest result for us, as multiples fell to the wayside. With victories on both sides, it’ll be fascinating to see how Day Three turns out. One thing we do know, is that there will be tough decisions to be made in the opener with Galopin Des Champs and Bob Olinger jousting for favouritism.”
