Following on from the Champion Chase on Ladies' Day is the Cross Country Chase. This Class 2 is the only race during that Festival that's run on the unique Cross Country course, a meandering track that features a variety of unusual obstacles.

Here's our free guide and tips for the 2023 Cross Country Chase.

Delta Work crashed Tiger Roll's retirement party when he claimed an unpopular victory in this race 12 months ago. Gordon Elliott's star made a winning return this term over the banks at Punchestown, before running a blinder under top-weight in the Cross Country Handicap at Cheltenham on Trials Day.

Gordon Elliott dropped Delta Work down into Cross Country company after a 15-length defeat in the Savills Chase last season. Elliott has decided to send Galvin down that same road, following two poor efforts in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase and the Savills.

Franco De Port was only beaten seven lengths behind Conflated in that Savills Chase and didn't run badly when fifth behind Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup. Willie Mullins now intends to run his eight-year-old in the Cross Country, before going on to either the British or Irish Grand National.

There's then a huge gap in the betting until we reach Back On The Lash and Deise Aba, the first and second from that Cross Country Handicap here on Trials Day. Snow Leopardess finished sixth on her first spin around the Cross Country course, before losing out narrowly in the Grand National Trial up at Haydock.

Henry De Bromhead will run Grand National-bound Gin On Lime and Plan Of Attack, who was third in this race 12 months ago. Former winner Easysland could represent Jonjo O'Neill, while Foxy Jacks, Diesel D'Allier, Mortal, Francky Du Berlais and Singing Banjo could all return following a handicap outing on Trials Day.

Cross Country Chase 2023 Tips

Despite his poor performances earlier in the season, Galvin is a serious player here, especially if the ground remains on the quick side. I still expect Delta Work to beat his stablemate, as experience is often vital around this course, but if Galvin did secure a second Cheltenham Festival win it wouldn't be a shock.

A capacity field of 16 is expected to be confirmed and several bookmakers are bound to be offering at least four places. Despite the strength of the top two in the market, and Franco De Port to some extent, there is scope for an each-way punt here.

The one I feel is too big at his current price is PLAN OF ATTACK. Henry De Bromhead's ten-year-old wouldn't have wanted the ground to be as heavy as it was 12 months ago, but Darragh O'Keeffe's mount ran his heart out, winning the battle for third place as Delta Work and Tiger Roll fought out the finish.

Plan Of Attack returned to Cheltenham for the Cross Country Handicap on Trials Day in January. De Bromhead's charge jumped the first couple of flights slowly, putting himself firmly on the back-foot. Although he could never work his way back into contention, Plan Of Attack did hit the line hard back in seventh place.

I doubt there will be a wave of support for Plan Of Attack between now and day two of the Cheltenham Festival. The 40/1 that's currently on offer should be readily available on the day, when you can back him with the bookmaker that's offering the most paid places.

Verdict

Given how well he ran on unsuitably soft ground last season, Plan Of Attack appeals as a decent each-way bet in this year's Cross Country.
