The Melbourne Renegades were consigned to defeat by eight runs in their opening match as they began the new season with a loss to the Sydney Sixers.

The Perth Scorchers are looking to begin the defence of their BBL crown with a victory in their opening match this weekend and the reigning champions are backed.

The Melbourne Renegades were left to rue a poor start in their opening game of the season as they saw four of their top-six batsmen dismissed for single-figure scores in a defeat to Sydney Sixers.

While Jake Fraser-McGurk (48), Aaron Finch (33) and Will Sutherland (51) did keep the Renegades in the running, they eventually ran out of steam.

With the ball, Will Sutherland (2/21) and Adam Zampa (2/24) looked dangerous, but the rest of the bowlers took some real punishment for little reward.

Perth Scorchers Form

The Perth Scorchers have been waiting patiently to get back out into the middle with the reigning champions looking to get their campaign off to a strong start.

Eleven wins in the regular season of BBL12 was quickly followed by a perfect run through the playoffs.

The champions will be looking to captain Ashton Turner, Mitchell Marsh and Zak Crawley for the runs, while last season's top scorer Aaron Hardie (460 runs at an average of 41.81) will be one to watch.
