Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder meet in a Big Bash match in Canberra on Saturday. The Stars won their opening match and that bit of momentum could be the catalyst towards another win against a Thunder team who have yet to play.

Melbourne Stars Form

The Melbourne Stars ended last season as runner-up in the Big Bash after losing out in the final to the Sydney Sixers.

This season has started well with the Melbourne Stars winning their first match by six wickets against the Brisbane Heat in Canberra.

The Heat batted first but Nathan Coulter-Nile was magnificent with the ball as he took 4-10 in 3.5 overs for the Stars. This allowed them to restrict the Brisbane Heat to a below par total of 125 runs.

The Melbourne Stars were always favourites to chase that down but they did themselves no favours early on. Marcus Stoinis was dismissed off the second ball while Andre Fletcher and Ben Dunk followed soon after.

Hilton Cartwright and Glenn Maxwell steadied the ship, both of them scoring 46 runs as they took the Stars to victory.

Melbourne Stars Team News

The Melbourne Stars are likely to stick with the same side that won their opening match.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Sydney Thunder had an inconsistent season last year in the BBL as they finished fifth with six wins and seven defeats. They do however have players who can cause major damage, particularly on the batting side.

Callum Ferguson captains the side with two English players in Sam Billings and Alex Hales in their squad. Ben Cutting offers something with both bat and ball while Chris Green will look to back up his recent international call-up with a few good performances.

Chris Tremain, Daniel Sams and Adam Milne will offer plenty to the bowling side of things as the season goes on. The Thunder look a very balanced outfit and will surely be sitting among the top teams come the end of the season.

Sydney Thunder Team News

Sydney Thunder will hope Alex Hales can find some form at the top of the innings. He has not had the best of time of late, but he was the Thunder’s top run scorer last season.

There will be a reliance on regular stalwarts such as Alex Ross and Daniel Sams.
