South Africa vs Australia Predictions

South Africa have won their last four ODIs against Australia, including their group stage fixture at this World Cup. However, the Aussies have the wood over the Proteas in knockout World Cup games which makes this one tough to call.

With both sides in good form, I am backing South Africa to reach their first-ever World Cup final despite being underdogs.

  • South Arica have won 7 of their last 9 matches.
  • South Africa have won their last 4 ODIs against Australia.
  • South Africa’s 100+ 4 times at the World Cup already.
  • Australia have won their last 7 matches.
  • Australia’s David Warner has scored 50+ runs in 3 of his last 5 matches.

Head to Head

South Africa have won their last four ODIs against Australia, all of which were in 2023. They last played during this World Cup, a fixture the Proteas won by 134 runs.

South Africa Form

South Africa were not favoured going into the tournament, but their performances have made many stand up and take notice. They did lose twice to the Netherlands and India but won their other seven games with ease.

Setting totals has been the Proteas strength but they have struggled to chase. Both defeats came whilst chasing and their last game saw them win by five wickets against Afghanistan.

Chasing 244 runs, South Africa laboured but Rassie van der Dussen’s 76* steered them home with just over six overs to spare.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

South Africa might opt for two spinners in this contest if the pitch is a bit dry. That means Shamsi and Maharaj could play a key role, but one feels the toss will be very important as well.

Australia Form

Australia started the tournament slowly, losing to India and South Africa in their opening two games. However, however, won their next seven which shot them up to a third-place finish.

In their last match, Australia chased down 306 runs against Bangladesh to win. In the chase, Mitchell Marsh batted superbly, smashing 177 runs off 132 balls while David Warner continued his good form with another score of 50+. Steven Smith ended on 63* as they chased the score with more than five overs to spare.

While the Aussies have a poor recent record against South Africa, they have won their two previous semi-finals against the Proteas – in 1999 and 2007.

Australia Injuries & Team News

The Aussies are more than likely going to stick with a similar side to the last game, although Glenn Maxwell will almost certainly make a return.

Verdict

I am backing South Africa to win with Quinton de Kock to top score.

For Australia, the in-form David Warner is backed to score runs.
