Pakistan vs New Zealand Predictions

Pakistan and New Zealand return to Karachi, the venue from the Tri Series final less than a week ago. On that occasion, the Black Caps were comfortable winners.

The tournament hosts are favourites despite losing twice to New Zealand recently. I am going to back the Black Caps to make it three successive wins over Pakistan.

  • Pakistan have lost 2 of their last 3 ODI matches.
  • Pakistan are the defending Champions Trophy winners.
  • Pakistan’s Salman Agha has scored 132 & 45 runs in his last 2 matches.
  • New Zealand have won their last 2 ODIs against Pakistan.
  • New Zealand’s Devon Conway has scored 97 & 48 runs in his last 2 matches.
  • New Zealand have won their last 3 ODI matches.

Head to Head

New Zealand have won three of their last four ODIs against Pakistan. They played in a Tri Series together last week where the Black Caps won both games, including the final against Pakistan.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan will be slightly concerned coming into the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil. They are the defending champions, having won the last event eight years ago (2017), however, their ODI form has been very patchy of late.

Over the last week, Pakistan played a warm-up Tri Series against New Zealand and South Africa. While Pakistan beat a weakened South African side, they lost both games, including the final against New Zealand.

In the final of that tournament, Pakistan batted first, scoring a measly 242 runs. Mohammad Rizwan managed 46 runs while Salman Agha backed up his century against South Africa with 45 runs.

It was never enough against an in-form New Zealand side who chased the total down with more than four overs to spare in Karachi.

Pakistan Injuries & Team News

Pakistan were trying a few different things in the Tri Series but we expect them to return to the tried and tested methods for this opener.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand will be feeling relatively confident coming into the Champions Trophy despite the booking given them an outside chance at best. However, before we get to winning the tournament, the Black Caps need to get over the first hurdle – against the hosts, Pakistan.

Over the last couple of weeks, New Zealand have beaten Pakistan twice in Pakistan, the last match of which took place in Karachi just a few days ago. In that Tri Series final, New Zealand chased down 242 to win convincingly in the end.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham both scored 50+ runs in the match while Devon Conway backed his 97 up with 48 runs. Glenn Phillips didn’t bat long, scoring 20 off 17 balls, but he did smash a beautiful century in the previous game against Pakistan.

New Zealand Injuries & Team News

New Zealand will certainly make changes from the Tri Series final with Kane Williamson almost certainly returning to the side. Devon Conway is back in form and should open with a decision lying with his partner between Will Young and Rachin Ravindra.

Verdict

New Zealand are backed to win with Devon Conway tipped to continue his run scoring form. For Pakistan, I am looking at Salman Agha, who has scored some big runs of late.
