Royal Challengers Bangalore v Sunrisers Hyderabad Preview & Tips

Sunrisers saw their winning momentum snapped up by the Super Kings but are still one of the most balanced sides in the IPL. With a top-two slot assured, they set their sights on recapturing the winning momentum against an erratic Royal Challengers.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Just when they looked dead and buried, the Royal Challengers stormed back into contention with a ten-wicket demolition of Kings XI. The win was set up with Umesh Yadav’s spell of 3/23 that restricted the Kings XI to the season’s second-lowest total of 88.

Virat Kohli’s 48 off 28 balls and Parthiv Patel’s 40 off 22 made sure that the Royal Challengers improved their NRR by chasing down the score in just 8.1 overs. However, the Challengers remain a two-prong batting unit.

Kohli (514 runs, SR 142.38) and AB de Villiers (358 runs, SR 178.10) remain their batting pillars, with everyone else continuing to falter. Bowling too is erratic with Yadav (17 wickets, ER 8.01) and Yuzvendra Chahal (11 wickets, ER 7.35) trying to hold the attack together.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers saw their five-match winning run halted by Chennai Super Kings in an eight-wicket loss. A stroke-filled 79 off 49 from Shikhar Dhawan aided by a serene 51 off 39 from Kane Williamson gave the Sunrisers a total of 179/4.

However, that wasn’t enough for a counterattacking 100* off 62 from Ambati Rayudu, supported well by Shane Watson’s 57 off 35. The famed Sunrisers bowling attack had no answers as the Super Kings cruised to 180/2.

Williamson (544 runs, SR 134.98) continues to pile up runs in a stupendous season for the Kiwi, while Dhawan (369 runs, SR 142.47) is picking up form at the right time for the Sunrisers.

Bowling remains stellar with Rashid Khan (13 wickets, ER 7.20) leading the squeeze, although the dwindling returns of Siddharth Kaul (13 wickets, ER 7.87) are a concern.

Match Up

When the teams met earlier this season, it ended in a thrilling five-run win for the Sunrisers. Williamson’s 56 off 39 shepherded the Sunrisers batting that folded for a paltry 146.

Royal Challengers looked set to chase that down, but the famous Sunrisers’ squeeze in the middle overs choked them out. Kohli’s 39 off 30 was a laborious knock, with every Sunrisers bowler chipping in to control the chase.

Key Statistics

  • Royal Challengers have won 3 of their 6 home games this season.
  • Sunrisers are unbeaten in 5 matches against the Royal Challengers, winning 4.
  • Sunrisers remain the most frugal side this IPL conceding just 7.54 runs per over.
  • Sunrisers have won 4 of their 6 away games this season.

Verdict

Sunrisers look better balanced to tackle the two-prong batting threat of Royal Challengers and get back to winning ways. They should have no problems in keeping the Royal Challengers quiet in the powerplay.
