Australia vs New Zealand 1st ODI Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Australia host New Zealand at the SCG in the 1st ODI of a three-match series on Friday. The hosts are in poor form while the Black Caps arrive with much confidence. This could lead to another disappointing series for Australia with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor tipped to be among the runs.

Australia's Marnus Labuschagne has performed admirably and scored a maiden ODI century in his last match.

Australia Form

Australia were disappointing in their recent 3-0 series loss in South Africa. Their last match in Potchefstroom ended in a six wicket defeat after Australia only managed 254 runs on a superb batting wicket.

Marnus Labuschage scored 108 runs but failed to get support, with next highest total being 36 runs from D’Arcy Short. Australia toiled with the ball but they never had enough runs on the board to pressure the hosts, eventually losing with five overs to spare.

The consistency of the Australian batsmen needs to be questioned. Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steven Smith all managed to get going during the series in South Africa but threw their wickets away at crucial times.

Australia News

Australia have yet to announce their squad but there shouldn’t be too many changes from the side that played South Africa.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand will be pumped up for this ODI series. Australia sent them home with their tails firmly between their legs after a Test series a couple of months ago but the two sides go into this series in vastly different form.

New Zealand recently thrashed India 3-0 in a home ODI series. Their last match at Mount Maunganui saw New Zealand chase down India’s total of 296 runs with three overs to spare to win by five wickets.

Martin Guptill scored 66 runs to record his second successive 50+ score while Henry Nicholls scored 80 runs. In the previous two matches it was Ross Taylor who carried the batting side of things with scores of 73 and 109 runs.

I fancy New Zealand to continue this momentum and get the win over Australia with Ross Taylor tipped to play a crucial role.

New Zealand News

New Zealand are likely to send their full strength squad to Australia but we’ll update you as soon as the squads are announced.

Australia vs New Zealand Head to Head

New Zealand have won two of their last three completed matches against Australia. Their last match however ended in an Australian victory by 86 runs at the 2019 Cricket World Cup at Lord’s.

Australia vs New Zealand Betting Odds

Out of form Australia are favourites at 1.57 to win with New Zealand valued at 2.37. David Warner can be backed at 3.75 to be the Aussies best batsman with Seven Smith and Aaron Finch priced at 4.33.

Centurion in his last match, Marnus Labuschagne can be backed at 6.00 in the best batsman market. For New Zealand Kane Williamson can be backed at 3.75 while in-form Ross Taylor will pay 5.00.

Australia vs New Zealand Match Up

Australia come into this home series in terrible ODI form mainly due to a failing batting line-up. David Warner, Aaron Finch, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne gives the look of a superb top four but seldom has more than one of them put a score on the board.

On the other hand New Zealand have been flying with bat in hand but keeping that consistency will be necessary against a quality Australian bowling line-up.

Marnus Labuschagne is tipped to be Australia's best batsman after scoring 108 in his last ODI match.
