England welcome Ireland to the Rose Bowl for the 1st ODI on Thursday. The hosts are missing some top players while Ireland have struggled with the bat recently so I don’t expect a high-scoring encounter.

England’s Joe Denly has been in fine form with the bat and that is tipped to continue.

England Form

England are ranked No.1 in the world in ODI cricket and rightly so. Not only did they claim the World Cup title in 2019, they have also won 14 of their last 18 ODI matches.

England’s last ODI took place in February 2020 against South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. After restricting South Africa to 256 runs, England managed to chase the total down to win by two wickets.

Joe Denly top scored with 66 runs to follow up his 87 runs in the previous match.

England News

England are resting a number of players including Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes.

This should give Joe Denly an opportunity to bat at three while James Vince, Sam Billings, Tom Banton and Tom Curran will get the opportunity to prove their worth.

Ireland Form

Ireland’s ODI form has been decent by their standards. Within their ranks they have a number of quality players but putting it all together on the big day seems to be a challenge.

Their last match took place in January 2020 at St George’s against the West Indies. Batting first Ireland only managed 203 runs with Andy Balbirnie scoring 71 runs. The West indies chased down the total with ease to win by five wickets.

Balbirnie scored 60 runs in a warm-up game just a few days ago against the England Lions which should ensure he goes into this series in form.

Ireland News

Ireland are full strength along with a number of youngsters for COVID-19 precautions. Paul Stirling, William Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie will be key players for Ireland.

England vs Ireland Head to Head

England hold a 8-1 advantage over Ireland in their 10 matches. There was one no result.

They last met in 2019 in Dublin where England won by four wickets with an under-strength team.

England vs Ireland Odds

England are overwhelming favourites at 1.12 with Ireland available at 6.00. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy are both available at 3.50 to be England’s best bastsman.

For Ireland Andy Balbirnie can be backed at 4.50 to be their best batsman.

England vs Ireland Match Up

England are resting a number of their stars for this series with a Test series around the corner but will still put out a very strong side.

Ireland’s batsmen have struggled in recent times and in English conditions could find the going tough against the hosts.

England vs Ireland Stats
