India vs South Africa 1st ODI Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

India face South Africa in the 1st ODI at the Himachal Pradesh Ground with the hosts desperate to get their ODI form back on track. South Africa arrive in India in incredible form so I’m backing them to keep that going with Heinrich Klaasen tipped in the 50+ runs market.

Shikhar Dhawan’s return for India  is a huge boost and he has a fantastic record against South Africa.

India Form

India have not been consistent in ODI cricket since the World Cup and lost their recent series in New Zealand 3-0. The last match saw India score 296 runs with KL Rahul top scoring on 112 runs. New Zealand however cruised home with three overs to spare to win by five wickets.

It was a disappointing tour of New Zealand so India have returned home under huge pressure. Captain Virat Kohli will want to sort the issues out but they come up against an in-form South African unit.

The return of Shikhar Dhawan is a massive boost to India considering he averages almost 50 against South Africa in ODI cricket. This includes three 100+ scores and four 50+ scores in 18 matches.

South Africa Form

South Africa have won six of their last seven ODIs including a 3-0 series win over Australia just prior to this Indian tour. In their last match in Potchefstroom South Africa restricted Australia 254 runs and then chased it down with comfort.

Heinrich Klaasen scored 68 unbeaten runs as South Africa went on to win by six wickets. Klaasen has been in magnificent form with an average of 242 in his three matches against Australia. I am certainly looking at him to score 50+ runs again.

The last time South Africa toured India they won the five match series 3-2 and will want a repeat this time around. Some experienced players return including Faf du Plessis which ensures there won’t be too many players who haven’t experienced these conditions before.

South Africa News

South Africa have lost Tabraiz Shamsi for the tour due to the birth of his child. He may however rejoin the squad later in the series. Temba Bavuma has returned as has former captain Faf du Plessis.

India vs South Africa Head to Head

South Africa have over the years had the better of India but in recent times India have won seven of their last 8 ODIs.  The last ODI between India and South Africa ended in a six wicket victory for India during the 2019 Cricket World Cup in Southampton.

India vs South Africa Betting Odds

India are comfortable favourites at 1.40 while South Africa is valued at 3.00 to win. Virat Kohli can be backed at 3.10 to be India's best batsman with Shikhar Dhawan at 4.50.

Quinton de Kock leads the best batsman market for South Africa at 3.60 followed by Temba Bavuma, Faf du Plessis and Janneman Malan all on 5.00. The in-form Heirich Klaasen is valued at 4.00 to score 50+ runs.

India vs South Africa Match Up

The key to this match will be how India deal with South Africa’s in form batting line-up. The two sides come into this series in contrasting form with India’s batsmen in particular struggling. Back home they will look to make an impression though.

South Africa will want to keep the momentum they have built against Australia but the Proteas batsmen, despite their superb form, will need to adjust fast to the different conditions in India.
