New Zealand vs India Predictions

ODI cricket is probably New Zealand’s favoured format considering the balance of their side. That coupled with India resting key players makes me believe that the hosts will have the better of this opening match.

  • New Zealand have won their last 4 ODI matches against India.
  • New Zealand’s Kane Williamson has scored 40, 61, 46 & 61 runs in his last 4 T20I matches.
  • India’s Shubman Gill averages 75 in ODI cricket this year.

Head to Head

New Zealand have won their last four ODI matches against India. Their last meeting came in 2020 when the Black Caps won the series 3-0 at home, winning the final match by five wickets.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand has not played much ODI cricket of late considering that, like most teams, prepared for the T20 Cricket World Cup most of this year.

The hosts recently suffered a 1-0 series defeat to India in the T20 series. They lost the second match quite convincingly while the first was rained out and the third ended in a tie.

Kane Williamson will hope to continue with his superb form from the T20 games. He has been scoring runs in bucket loads and with more time in the ODIs, he could lead the Black Caps to a series win.

New Zealand Injuries & Team News

New Zealand will be looking to make some changes from their T20 side. Ish Sodhi is not in the ODI squad so Matt Henry is likely to play along with Mitch Santner.

India Form

India’s year has been somewhat up-and-down with some incredible performances across all formats, mixed with poor results. Their T20 World Cup exit is an example of the latter where they were dominated by England.

A T20 series win over New Zealand prior to this ODI series will give them confidence, especially considering that many top players have been rested.

After a rained out opening T20 fixture, India won the second game thanks to a marvelous innings from Suryakumar Yadav. The third match, also interrupted by rain, ended in a tie.

India Injuries & Team News

Shubman Gill should come into the side after not playing in the T20I series. He has been in great ODI form, averaging 75 with a strike rate of over 100 in 2022.

Verdict

New Zealand are backed to win the 1st ODI with Kane Williamson to top score.

For India, Shubman Gill has been sublime in ODI cricket this year. He is tipped in the best batsman market.
