New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Predictions

The hosts are heavy favourites but are missing nine regular first-choice players. While they still have a decent side to put out, this may be a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to win on foreign soil.

Head to Head

New Zealand have won their last five ODIs against Sri Lanka. Their last encounter took place during the 2019 World Cup where the Black Caps won by 10 wickets.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand has long been known for their white-ball grit in cricket circles but over the last eight years or so, they have become one of the top teams in the world.

They have reached the last two World Cup finals and later this year will try to win their first ever ODI WC title. Their most recent ODI series however ended in a 3-0 series loss in India.

Just prior to that, they Black Caps did manage to beat Pakistan 2-1 in Pakistan. What made it all the more impressive is that New Zealand had to come from a 1-0 deficit to win the series.

On home soil the Black Caps are however very strong, particularly against sub-continent opposition. This will be a good indication as to where they are with the World Cup mere months away.

New Zealand Injuries & Team News

With World Cup qualification secured, the New Zealand board has given nine regulars clearance to play in the IPL which means they will not be available for this series.

Tom Latham will captain the side and likely open with Finn Allen.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka will take something from their strong showing in the Test series against New Zealand. They are also vastly improved in the white-ball game, although most of their success has come in the T20 format where they won the Asia Cup in 2022.

Their last ODI series ended in a 3-0 loss in India, much like New Zealand. In the opening two games the Sri Lankans showed some fight but were completely blown away in the third.

With the World Cup later this year the Sri Lankans will be looking to find some confidence despite conditions not being in their favour.

Sri Lanka Injuries & Team News

Sri Lanka have a settled side with Dasun Shanaka at the helm.

Verdict

With New Zealand missing nine first team regulars I feel this is a great opportunity for Sri Lanka. There is superb value in backing a win for the visitors.
