South Africa host England in the 1st ODI on Sunday. It was orignally supposed to take place at Newlands on Friday but the match was postponed to today due to someone testing positive for COVID-19. The match will now take place in Paarl at Boland Park.

England’s ODI form has not been great of late while South Africa have won six of their last seven – could we see an upset in Cape Town on Friday?

South Africa Form

South Africa come into the ODI series off the back of a 3-0 T20 series loss to England. The hosts have however won six of their last seven ODI matches and will have a lot more confidence in the longer format.

The Proteas last played ODI cricket in March 2020 where they beat Australia 3-0 in a home series. In the 3rd ODI South Africa successfully chased down 254 runs in Potchefstroom to win by six wickets.

Australia’s total was thanks to Marnus Labuschagne’s 108 runs but the hosts bowling was tight and never allowed the Aussies to get away. In response, Jon-Jon Smuts top scored with 84 runs, Kyle Verreynne scored 50 and Heinrich Klaasen managed 68 runs.

South Africa Team News

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the series after he picked up an injury in the 2nd T20. There will be a number of changes from the T20 side with David Miller likely to be available.

It is not clear whether allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo will be available. Someone in the squad has tested positive for COVID-19 but it has not been announced just who that is.

England Form

England have played two ODI series’ since cricket returned from lockdown. They first beat Ireland 2-1 in a three-match series before losing 2-1 to Australia on home soil.

Going into the final ODI at Old Trafford against Australia the series was level at 1-1. It was a winner takes all scenario and England looked well on their as Jonny Bairstow smashed 112 while Sam Billings and Chris Woakes added 57 and 53 runs respectively.

England’s total of 302 looked like a winning score with Australia reeling on 73-5. But Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell put on a 212-run partnership to see the Aussies home with two balls to spare.

England Team News

England will welcome back Joe Root and a number of other players to the ODI fold. Jos Buttler will make way at the top of the order for Jonny Bairstow while Root will bat at three or four.

Sam Billings has also shown magnificent form in ODI cricket and will likely hold onto his middle-order batting spot.
