The tournament began in 2014 and replaced the ECB 40 tournament which ran for three years between 2010 and 2013. The shift was to align the provincial game with the international One Day format which consists of 50 overs.

There are two groups with nine teams that start the tournament. The groups used to be organised geographically but has recently changed to a random draw.

The top three teams progress from each group to the knock-out stage. The two teams that top the group automatically qualify for the semi-finals while the other four fight it out for a place to join them.
