New Zealand vs Afghanistan Preview

New Zealand are favourites but pitch conditions can bring Afghanistan into the game. However, the value here is on New Zealand batsman, Glenn Phillips.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand have won their only previous T20 World Cup game against Afghanistan.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand drew their last T20I series ahead of the World Cup against Pakistan 2-2, losing the 5th T20I by nine runs.

Pakistan scored 178/5 off their 20 overs, William O’Rourke (1/25, econ 6.25) producing the best figures with the ball.

Tim Seifert (52 off 33 balls) got the innings off to a strong start and Josh Clarkson (38* off 26 balls) rallied late with three fours and two sixes, but New Zealand were bowled out for 169 off 19.2 overs.

New Zealand News

New Zealand are in good form and are unlikely to make any changes to their team.

Afghanistan Form

After beating Ireland 2-1 in a pre-World Cup T20I series, Afghanistan won their opening match of the World Cup by beating Uganda by 125 runs.

Afghanistan scored 183/5 off their 20 overs, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76 off 45 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (70 off 46 balls) sharing an opening stand of 154 in 15 overs.

Uganda imploded against the testing Afghanistan bowling and were bowled out for 58 off 16 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi returned the spectacular figures of 4-0-9-5 (econ 2.25).

Afghanistan News

Afghanistan are in good form and are unlikely to make any changes to their team.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to win. I am also backing Glenn Phillips to top score for New Zealand.

Ibrahim Zadran is a good bet to top score for Afghanistan.
