The group stage of the 2021 T20 Cricket World Cup gets underway on 17 October 2021 when Oman play Papua New Guinea. The group stage consists of two groups of four, the top two teams in each group will progress to the Super 12.
The world’s top eight ranked countries are automatically qualified for the Super 12 which begins on 23 October 2021.
Bookmaker bet365 has India as favourites at 3.50 to win their second title. India won the inaugural event back in 2007, hosted by South Africa when they defeated arch-rivals, Pakistan. Since then India have only made the 2014 final.
The West Indies are the most successful T20 World Cup team having claimed two titles. That was in 2012 and 2016 which means they come into this tournament as the defending champs. Despite their success, the Windies are priced at 7.00 behind India and England, and level with Australia.
This is expected to be a very open World Cup. With the IPL taking place in the UAE and concluding just before the World Cup starts, the players who participated will be well acclimatised to conditions already.
Teams like South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will try to fly under the radar during the World Cup and spring a surprise, which certainly isn’t beyond their capabilities.
