  • Australia’s Steven Smith averages 113.50 at the MCG in 7 Test matches.

Head to Head

India lead Australia 4-2 in their last eight Test matches along with two draws. The last match however saw Australia win comfortably by eight wickets in Adelaide.

Australia Form

Australia come into this 2nd Test leading the series 1-0 after the 1st Test. Their eight wicket win in Adelaide will give the team confidence heading into this match.

India had the better of the match and came into day three in the pound seat to take a 1-0 lead. What followed is seldom seen in international cricket as Australia bowled India out for 36 runs.

Back to day one, Australia bowled well but India held out to score 244 runs. Australia’s response was timid until Tim Paine scored a brilliant 73 runs lower down the order to take the hosts to 191 all out – handing India a 53-run lead.

Up stepped Josh Hazelwood who took 5-8 and Pat Cummins 4-21 as they bowled their visitors out for 36 runs, leaving a chase of 93 runs. Matthew Wade and Marnus Labuschagne both got themselves out but fortunately for Australia Joe Burns batted himself back into form with an unbeaten 51 runs.

Australia Injuries & Team News

It looks increasingly likely that David Warner will miss the Boxing Day Test, although whispers from his side is that he may still make it.

Fellow opener Will Pucovski has not recovered from concussion so Australia may stick with Matthew Wade and Joe Burns at the top of the order.

India Form

India would have spent the last week trying for forget about what happened at Adelaide. For a great cricketing nation to be bowled out for 36 is nothing short of an embarrassment.

That said, India will be a lot more comfortable with the traditional Test match taking place in the 2nd Test. No day/night and no pink ball.

India started the Test well with Cheteshwar Pujara (43), Virat Kohli (74) and Ajinkya Rahane (42) steering them to a 244-run total. That was backed up by the bowlers who dismissed Australia for 191 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin (4-55) and Umesh Yadav (3-40) were the pick of the bowlers.

In the second innings no batsman managed double figures as India were bowled out for 36 runs. The deflated tourists tried to show some fight during Australia’s 93-run chase but the players were clearly shell-shocked from what had happened.

India Injuries & Team News

India have suffered two massive blows ahead of the 2nd Test. Virat Kohli has left on paternity leave while fast bowler Mohammed Shami has a broken arm.

Shami’s replacement will be either Mohammed Siraj or Navdeep Saini, either of which will be on debut.

Shubman Gill could replace Virat Kohli but it looks increasingly likely that he will take the place of Prithvi Shaw. That means KL Rahul could feature in India’s middle order.

There have also been calls for wicketkeeper/batsman Rishabh Shaw to come in for Wriddhiman Saha who failed to get going in the 1st Test.
