Australia’s 12 match unbeaten home run against Pakistan unlikely to end at the Gabba

The 1st Test between Australia and Pakistan takes place at the Gabba in Brisbane. The hosts are huge favourites but there is plenty of value in the best batsman markets with Pakistan’s Babar Azam in solid form.

Australia Form

Australia retained the Ashes in their last Test series, earning a 2-2 draw despite losing the 5th Test. Perhaps they took the foot off the gas slightly as England emerged victorious.

After bowling England out for 294 Australia responded with 225 runs. Steven Smith top scored with 80 runs to continue his incredible Ashes form. England scored 329 runs in their second innings while the Aussies only managed 265 in their second innings, losing by 135 runs.

Australia are clear favourites at 1.25 to beat Pakistan and considering that they haven’t lost at home to Pakistan in 12 Tests and since 1995, I feel the short odds are justified. Smith averaged 110.57 over the four Ashes Tests and is tipped to be Australia’s best batsman at 2.62.

Australia News

There aren't many issues with regards to the Australian line-up. Marnus Labuschagne will almost definitely retain his place after an impressive Ashes showing.

In the bowling department the selectors are likely to with the Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood. James Pattinson is suspended for disciplinary reasons.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan go into the first Test against Australia low on confidence after four straight Test defeats. That said, their last match was in January 2019 against South Africa at Centurion.

Pakistan only managed 185 runs in response to South Africa’s 262. The hosts then scored 303 in their second innings leaving Pakistan needing 380 runs for victory. They folded for 237 runs and lost by 107 runs.

Babar Azam is one batsman who has stood up and performed, averaging 52.84 in his last nine Test matches. If Pakistan are to get an upset victory over Australia Azam will be key. He is fantastic value at 5.00 to be Pakistan’s best first innings batsman.

Pakistan can be backed at 7.50 for the win while the draw is paying at the same odds. It would be a bold choice to back Pakistan, but should their bowlers perform to their high standards anything is possible.

Pakistan News

16-year-old fast bowling sensation Naseem Shah is in line for selection but it is unclear whether he will be risked. Mohammad Abbas and Shaheen Afridi are set to spearhead the bowling attack while Babar Azam and Imam-Ul-Haq will be the key batsmen.

Australia vs Pakistan Head to Head

Australia have won three of the last five Test matches against Pakistan with one draw and one defeat. It is interesting to note that the three victories all came in Australia while the draw and defeat came in Dubai.

The last match between the two was won by Pakistan in Dubai by 373 runs. Mohammad Abbas walked away with the man of the match award for his match figures of 10-95.

Australia vs Pakistan Betting Odds

Australia are favourites at 1.25 to win at home while Pakistan and a draw is paying 7.50. There is value elsewhere like in the best first innings batsman market. Steven Smith is clear favourite for Australia at 2.62 while David Warner can be backed at 3.75 to turn around his form.

Azhar Ali is favourite at 4.00 to be Pakistan's best first innings batsman while the fine form of Babar Azam can be backed at 5.00 to be the best batsman. Mohammad Abbas is paying 3.20 to be Pakistan's best first innings bowler.

In the Man of the Match market Steven Smith is favourite at 6.00 while Babar Azam is paying 17.00 in the same market.

Australia vs Pakistan Match Up

It should be interesting to see the two bowling line-ups clash in this encounter. Pakistan have always produced top quality fast bowlers and in Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas they have enough weapons to cause the hosts problems. It is in the batting department that Pakistan normally struggle.
