Bangladesh vs Afghanistan 1st Test Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

Bangladesh host Afghanistan in Chattogram in the only Test match of the series. Bangladesh have won their last three Tests at home and I don’t see it changing this time around.

Mahmudullah has been among the runs in the last five Test matches for Bangladesh with three 100+ scores in his last five matches. He is also a fantastic player of spin bowling, something we will see a lot of in Chattogram and is on my betslip.

In what is Afghanistan’s third ever Test I am backing Rahmat Shah to continue his good start to the longer format in the best batsman market.

Bangladesh Form & Team News

Bangladesh last played a Test match in March, losing a three match series against New Zealand 2-0 after the final Test in Christchurch was called off. Playing in New Zealand is never easy especially for a sub-continent side used to slower and drier pitches.

At the Basin Reserve in their last match Bangladesh batted first scoring 211 runs as Tamim Iqbal top-scored with 74 runs. New Zealand responded with a mammoth 432 runs and Bangladesh found themselves against the ropes.

In a similar innings to the first Bangladesh managed only 209 runs, this time it was Mahmudullah who top scored with 67 runs to continue his fantastic run of Test match form. The Tigers lost the match by and innings and 12 runs.

Despite their struggles in New Zealand, Bangladesh are a formidable side at home. They have won their last three matches while Mahmudullah has scored 100+ runs on three occasions in five Tests’. I believe he is good value to be Bangladesh’s best first innings batsman at 5.50.

Understandably the hosts are outright favourites to beat Afghanistan at 1.44. A draw will pay 4.75.

Afghanistan Form & Team News

Afghanistan only gained Test status in 2018 and are very much rookies at this level. With only two Test matches behind them it will be a struggle, the bookmakers agree with Afghanistan underdogs at 7.00.

In their last Test match they came out victorious against fellow Test minnows Ireland in Dehradun, India. Bowling first Afghanistan restricted Ireland to 172 runs before compiling 314 runs themselves. Rahmat Shah scored 98 runs and was their best batsman.

Rashid Khan took 5-82 in the second innings as Ireland scored 288 runs, leaving Afghanistan with a target of 148 runs. They chased it down with seven wickets in hand, Rahmat Shah top-scoring again with 76 runs.

It should be an enthralling contest between both teams’ spinners but Bangladesh batsmen have far more experience. I don’t see an upset on the cards but there is good value in Rahmat Shah to be Afghanistan’s best first innings batsman at 4.00.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Head to Head

Bangladesh and Afghanistan have never previously met in Test match cricket.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Match Up

This match will largely be decided by spin bowling. Both sub-continent teams are largely spin dominant and the pitch will have plenty of turn on offer. Bangladesh have only selected one fast bowler in their squad which tells the story.

Afghanistan have plenty of world class spin options, most notably Rashid Khan who will be a popular pick to be their best bowler.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Key Statistics

  • Bangladesh have won their last 3 home Test matches.
  • Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah has scored 100+ in 3 of his last 5 test matches.
  • Afghanistan’s Rahat Shah scored 98 and 76 runs in his last Test match.

I see a reasonably comfortable victory for Bangladesh but Rahmat Shah has shown his class in a short career. He is tipped to be Afghanistan's best first innings batsman at 4.00.

Mahmudullah has scored three centuries in his last five Test matches and holds value at 5.50 to be the hosts best first innings batsman.

Post bet analysis

Afghanistan look set for victory in this test with Rahmat Shah coming up trunks for me with 102 runs in the first innings. Mahmudullah is a different story after scoring seven runs in each innings. Overall a good profit on this one.
