England vs India Predictions

England’s batting struggles continued in the 1st Test as only Joe Root came through with any credit. Rain saved England from defeat on the final day so my best bet is for India to win.

Head to Head

Earlier this year India beat England 3-1 when the English toured. The first Test of this series ended in a draw when the final day was completely washed out. India certainly looked favourites to win at that point.

England Form

England’s poor Test form continued in Nottingham despite not losing the match. They have still lost four of their last seven with just one win.

Despite Joe Root trying to sell it to the media that England had a good chance on day five in the 1st Test, the reality is deep down he will be pleased that the rain arrived when it did.

England have a serious batting problem in Test cricket at the moment. They batted first in Nottingham, scoring just 183 runs. Joe Root top scored on 64 runs.

Ollie Robinson then took five and James Anderson four wickets to restrict India to 278 runs, a 95-run lead. Joe Root again led the way in the second innings with a magnificent 109 runs. That left India needing 208 runs to win and by the end of day four they were 52-1.

There wasn’t a ball bowled on the final day as the weather gods came to the rescue.

England Injuries & Team News

England’s batting failures continued in the 1st Test, something Chris Silverwood is sure to address. Ollie Pope and Haseeb Hameed are both likely to start the 2nd Test, with Zack Crawley and Dan Lawrence most likely to miss out.

India Form

India will be confident going into the 2nd Test after putting in a good performance in the drawn 1st Test in Nottingham.

Jasprit Bumrah was magnificent with the ball, taking 4-46 after England opted to bat first. KL Rahul top scored for India with 84 runs as they surpassed England’s 183 to score 278 runs.

In the second innings it was again Bumrah who produced the goods, this time taking 5-64 as India dismissed England for 303 runs. This left the visitors needing 208 runs to win.

By the close of day four KL Rahul had been dismissed for 26 but Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara were not out on 12 each. With the total on 52 runs India required a further 156 runs on day five but the rain came and no play was possible.

India Injuries & Team News

In interviews leading up to the 2nd Test Virat Kohli has indicated that India will remain unchanged. That means there is still no place for Ravi Ashwin, the world’s top spin bowler.

Ravindra Jadeja has been preferred in the spin bowling department mainly for the batting he adds lower down the order.

Verdict

Rain stopped India from taking a 1-0 lead in the series and can win the 2nd Test. Virat Kohli's record speaks for itself and he is tipped to top score for India and be man of the match.

Joe Root is the only English batsman in form and can be backed in the top first innings run scorer market.
