England host Pakistan in the 1st Test of a three-match series at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Pakistan have a fine record in England and with conditions reported to suit the spin bowlers, Pakistan are capable of causing an upset.

England Form

England won their recent series 2-1 against the West Indies with the last Test ending in a 269-run victory. England scored 369 runs batting first before dismissing the West Indies for 197. The hosts scored 226 runs in their second innings.

The West Indies never threatened in their second innings as England bowled them out for 129 runs. What will be of concern to England is that they lost the 1st Test to the West Indies, something they have done in their last five Test series.

England News

Despite conditions that may favour spin bowling England will likely stick with Dom Bess as their only spinner.

There is doubt whether Ben Stokes will be fit to bowl in the 1st Test but will certainly play as a batsman should he not be fit to bowl. The make-up of the team will change depending on Stokes fitness but if he can bowl then Zach Crawley is likely to play as an extra batsman.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan have won two of their last three Tests with the last one ending in a thumping innings and 44-run win over Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan bowled first and dismissed Bangladesh for 233 runs. Babar Azam continued his fine form scoring 143 runs as Pakistan scored 445 runs. The visitors were bundled out for 168 runs in their second innings.

Pakistan have won two of their last three Test matches in England. With the pitch expected to suit the spinners, Pakistan could offer superb value especially if they win the toss.

Pakistan News

Pakistan have a very strong bowling line-up and talk from the camp is that two spinners will play on what is expected to be a dry pitch. Yasir Shah is a shoe-in for the one spinning option.

England vs Pakistan Head to Head

Pakistan lead England 5-2 over their last eight Test matches with one draw. The last Test match between the two saw England win by an innings at 55 runs in Leeds in 2018. The series was drawn 1-1.

England vs Pakistan Odds

England are priced at 1.44 with Pakistan at 6.00. A draw will get you odds of 5.00 with bet365.

Joe Root is priced at 1.66 to score 50+ in either innings while Pakistan’s Babar Azam is valued at 2.00.

England vs Pakistan Match Up

The conditions at Old Trafford should ensure a good contest in the 1st Test. The teams are expecting dry conditions which should help Pakistan’s spinners so the toss may prove key – neither team will want to bat last in this one.
