Australia have arrived in India for a four-Test series starting on 9 February 2023 in Nagpur. It has been a much-awaited series between the two top ranked sides in Test cricket.

India are clear favourites bookmaker bet365 who has them priced at 1.55 to win the series. There is no argument that India is the toughest place to win Test matches for visiting sides, and Australia will need to at least avoid defeat to hold onto the number 1 ranking spot.

Australia history in India

Since their first Test match on India soil in 1956, Australia have managed 13 wins in 50 matches. India have won 21, there have been 15 draws and one tie in 1986.

More recent history makes for bleaker reading for the Aussies. They last toured India in 2017, a series they lost 2-1. However the one victory in Pune was more than most other teams have managed in recent years.

Going back a bit further, Australia have one win in their last 14 Test matches in India. There have also been four draws in those 14 matches stretching back to a series in 2004.

Australia Current Form

Despite their poor history in India, Australia have arrived full of confidence. They are the number one ranked side in the world at the moment for good reason.

Australia have won 10 and drawn four of their last 15 Test matches. Their sole defeat in that run came in Galle against Sri Lanka in July 2022.

That series against Sri Lanka ended in a 1-1 draw, but prior to that Australia beat Pakistan away 1-0 in a three-match series. So they have a recent history of producing results on the sub-continent, although India will provide a whole new challenge.

Since that Sri Lanka series, Australia have thrashed both the West Indies and South Africa on home soil.

India Home Form

No other side in world cricket can boast the record of India. They are as close to unbeatable as one could be. Over their last 43 Tests on home soil, India have lost just twice. Once to Australia in 2017 and to England in 2021.

In those 43 Test matches, India have been victorious 34 times with seven draws. Since that 2021 loss to England, India have won six at home and drawn one. That included three wins over England, one over New Zealand and two against Sri Lanka.

The obvious reason for the struggles of visiting nations is the pitches. They tend to turn a lot from day one, and with the quality of spinners that India possess, it is difficult to go five days toe-to-toe with them.

Test Match Venues

Nagpur

India have played six Test matches at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur previously. Of those six they have won four, lost one and drawn one.

Australia have only played their once, losing by 172 runs in 2008.

Delhi

The second Test will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. While India’s record looks a bit dicey here with 13 wins, six defeats and 15 draws in 34 matches, their recent form in Delhi has been outstanding.

The last time India lost in Delhi was in 1987 to the West Indies. Since then, they have won 10 matches and drawn two.

Australia have played in Delhi five times but the last time was in 2008 where the match ended in a draw.

Dharamsala

The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala is pretty new to Test cricket. It has only hosted one match previously.

That match was against Australia in 2017 where India won by eight wickets. Despite losing, Steven Smith will have fond memories having scored 111 runs in the first innings.

Ahmedabad

The final Test of the series will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India’s record here is also not great having won six, lost two and drawn six of their 14 matches stretching back to 1983. They have however won their last three games at this venue, all of which was against England.

This will be Australia’s first Test at this venue.

Verdict

This should be a cracking series between the top two sides in this format. Australia certainly have the batting lineup to trouble India but can they handle the spin options the visitors will throw at them over five days?

There will be matches Australia can target but much of it will come down to the quality of pitches produced.

It is tough to see the visitors come away with a Test series win considering India’s form at home. But they are capable, with some luck, of walking away with a drawn series or at least a win in the four games.
