England have won four of their last five Test matches against India. Their last match took place in September 2018 where England won by 118 runs.
India come into this series against England fresh off the most unlikely Test series win in Australia. Against all odds India managed to win that four-match series 2-1.
In the final Test, Australia batted first in Brisbane, scoring 369 runs. India responded with 336 runs thanks to Shardul Thakur’s 67 runs.
The second innings saw Australia bowled out for 294 runs which left India needing an unlikely 328 runs for victory. They were more likely to bat out the day for a draw but Shubman Gill (91), Cheteshwar Pujara (56) and Rishabh Pant (89) saw India home late on day five to win by three wickets.
India Injuries & Team News
India suffered a horrible injury streak in Australia but won the series with perhaps their third choice bowling line-up.
Captain, Virat Kohli will return to the side after the birth of his child. Others who return from injury is Ravi Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma.
Ravidra Jadeja will not feature due to injury. There are expected to be up to eight changes to the Indian side that won the 4th Test in Australia.
England come into this series against India having beaten Sri Lanka 2-0 away just over a week ago. It was two impressive performances by England as they got used to sub-continent conditions.
England’s last visit to India did not go according to plan as they suffered a 3-0 drubbing in a four-match series. India is probably the hardest place to tour for Test cricket in the world so England will have their work cut out.
In the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka, England bowled the hosts out for 381 runs. The visitors then responded with 344 runs as Joe Root (186) scored his second successive century.
From there the England spinners took control with Jack Leach and Dom Bess taking four wickets each. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 126 runs, leaving England a chase of 163 runs.
Dom Sibley top scored with 56 runs with Jos Buttler adding 46 runs down the order. England went on to win by six wickets.
England Injuries & Team News
The good news for England is that Ben Stokes has returned to the squad after sitting out the Sri Lanka tour. He is almost certain to start in place of the impressive youngster, Dan Lawrence.
On the bowling front, Jack Leach and Dom Bess should continue with conditions expected to be suitable to spin bowlers. England do however have the option of Moeen Ali who can also offer more batting depth.
