India vs England Predictions
India have more than enough quality to bounce back in the 2nd Test. The toss will once again be crucial but I can’t see India making the same mistakes again. The hosts are backed to win on a Chennai wicket that should take spin early on.
- India’s Shubman Gill has scored 50+ runs in 4 of his last 6 innings.
- India’s Virat Kohli scored 72 runs in his last Test innings.
- India’s Rishabh Pant has scored 91, 89 & 91 runs in his last 3 Test matches.
- India are unbeaten in 34 of their last 36 home Test matches.
- England’s Joe Root has scored 186, 228 & 218 in his last 3 Test matches.
Head to Head
England have won five of their last six Test matches against India. England won the 1st Test of the current series by 217 runs in Chennai.
India came into this series on a high after a magnificent series victory in Australia. They crashed down to earth in the 1st Test as England won by 227 runs in Chennai.
After England scored 578 runs in the first innings, India’s batsmen failed to produce something similar. Rishabh Pant continued his fine form with 91 runs while Cheteshwar Pujara scored 73 and Washington Sundar 85 runs in a 337 run total.
Ravi Ashwin took 6-61 to dismiss England for 178 runs in the second innings but the damage was already done. India needed to bat out four and a half sessions or score 420 runs to win.
The hosts were dismissed for 192 runs but Shubman Gill’s 50 and Virat Kohli’s 72 runs will give India confidence going into the 2nd Test.
India Injuries & Team News
India will go into the 2nd Test with a similar lineup to the 1st Test. The good news is that Axar Patel is fit and will take the place of Washington Sundar or Shahbaz Nadeem.
England arrived in India off the back of a 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka. They carried that momentum into the 1st Test against India in Chennai to upset the odds.
Joe Root won a crucial toss and elected to bat first. The visitors batted magnificent to score 578 runs with Root continuing his magnificent run of form with 218 runs.
Ben Stokes scored 82 and Dom Sibley 87 runs. Dom Bess took 4-76 as England dismissed India for 337 runs but chose not to enforce the follow-on.
Joe Root top scored (40) again as England were bowled out for 178 runs, leaving India a huge total of 420 to win.
India could only manage 192 runs as England cruised to a convincing 227-run victory in the 1st Test.
England Injuries & Team News
England have little reason to make changes but rumours are that Jimmy Anderson will be rested. Stuart Broad is his most likely replacement. Jofra Archer is unlikely to feature through injury.
Dan Lawrence did not perform batting at three but will probably get another run in the 2nd Test.
Jos Buttler will be rested for the remainder of the series with England's COVID-19 rest policy.
