India vs England Predictions
Worryingly for England, Virat Kohli is just starting to find his run scoring form while Rishabh Pant is in the form of his life. England will feel the day/night Test may suit them a bit more, though the pitch is still expected to take plenty of turn. My best bet is for Kohli to score 50+ runs in the first innings.
- India’s Virat Kohli has scored 72 & 62 runs in his last 2 Test matches.
- India’s Rishabh Pant has scored 91, 89, 91 & 58 runs in his last 4 Test matches.
- India are unbeaten in 35 of their last 37 home Test matches.
- India won the 2nd Test against England.
- England’s Joe Root has scored 186, 228 & 218 in 3 of his last 4 Test matches.
Head to Head
England have won four of their last six Test matches against India. India were comfortable winners in the 2nd Test of this series by 317 runs in Chennai.
India were expected to bounce back well in the 2nd Test and they did so by beating England by 317 runs. After the 1st Test defeat, India were always going to produce a pitch that offered plenty of turn.
The toss was crucially won by the hosts who elected to bat first. Rohit Sharma batted superbly for his 161 runs. Ajinkya Rahane chipped in with 67 and Rishabh Pant with 58 runs in a total of 329.
Ravi Ashwin then produced a brilliant bowling display, taking 5-43 as England were rolled over for 134 runs. Virat Kohli hit 62 runs in the second innings but it was Ashwin who starred again, scoring 106 runs in a man of the match performance.
Axar Patel was the pick of India’s bowlers in the second innings as he took 5-60. Ashwin took 3-53 as England were dismissed for 164 runs.
India Injuries & Team News
Opening batsman, Shubman Gill had to go for scans after the 2nd Test. He will need to prove his fitness ahead of the 3rd Test.
After a superb display last time out, India are not expected to make too many other changes.
England went into the 2nd Test full of confidence after winning the 1st Test. They would have expected India to produce a pitch in the 2nd Test that deteriorated fast and the hosts did exactly that.
Unfortunately, unlike the previous Test, India won the toss and batted first. Moeen Ali took 4-128 with India scoring 329 runs, which was an acceptable score.
England’s batsmen however let them down in their first batting innings, scoring only 134 runs. Ben Foakes top scored with 42 runs before India piled on 286 in their second innings.
This left England with two days to bat and a mammoth score to chase. Neither was likely and they only survived 54 overs. Ali scored 43 runs in a total of 164 as England suffered a heavy 317-run defeat.
England Injuries & Team News
England’s COVID-19 rotation policy will mean more changes for the 3rd Test. Moeen Ali has returned home after coming into the side for Dom Bess in the last Test.
Zack Crawley could make a return as Dan Lawrence continues to struggle in India.
