New Zealand vs India 1st Test Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

New Zealand face India in the 1st Test of a two-match series at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. India have won their last seven Tests’ and six of their last eight against New Zealand and deserve to be backed for victory.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli have been the recent form players for India so I’m backing them to get among the runs.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand are fresh off a 3-0 hammering in Australia at the start of 2020. The last Test ended in a 279 run defeat at the SCG after the Aussies scored 454 runs batting first.

The Black Caps responded with 256 runs before Australia declared on 217-2, leaving New Zealand with a chase of 415 runs for victory. They only managed 136 runs as the batsmen failed for the umpteenth time.

New Zealand's form has dipped in recent times although at home they should remain largely competitve. On the batting front the Black Caps have struggled, even star batsman Kane Williamson.

New Zealand News

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and star fast bowler Trent Boult should be fit to start the 1st Test.

India Form

India come into this Test series off the back of seven straight Test victories. Their last Test victory came over Bangladesh in Kolkata where they won by an innings and 46 runs.

After dismissing Bangladesh for a paltry 106 runs, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 56 runs and Virat Kohli 136 runs as India declared on 347 runs.

Bangladesh only managed 195 runs in their second innings. Ishant Sharma took 4-56 and Umesh Yadav 5-53 to lead India to yet another commanding victory.

India currently top the ICC Test Championship standings and are the world No.1 ranked Test side. A large reason for this is their ability to win away from home, not something associated with Indian teams of the past.

The bookmakers have given India favourable odds of 2.20 to win the 1st Test which offers value alongside Virat Kohli in the run scoring markets.

India News

India are full strength in New Zealand with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara joining the squad. They are both likely starters while Ravichandran Ashwin should be the only spin bowler.

New Zealand vs India Head to Head

India have won six of the last eight Test matches against New Zealand along with one draw and a defeat. Their last match took place in Indore in 2016 where India amassed 557 runs batting first.

New Zealand responded with 299 runs before India declared on 216-3 in the second innings. The hosts bowled the Black Caps out for 153 as they romped to a 321-run victory.

New Zealand vs India Betting Odds

New Zealand are slight underdogs at 2.60 with India at 2.20 for victory. A draw is priced at 4.50. In the draw no bet market the hosts can be backed at 2.10 and India at 1.72.

Virat Kohli is the favourite in the best first innings batsman market for India at 3.25 followed by Cheteshwar Pujara at 4.33. For New Zealand Kane Williamson is valued at 3.25 and Ross Taylor at 4.33.

New Zealand vs India Match Up

New Zealand’s batting frailties were laid bare against Australia in their last series and fixing those issues will be at the top of the Black Caps priority list. New Zealand are certainly better at home but they come up against an Indian side who have produced wonderful cricket outside of the sub-continent in recent years.
