England have won three of their last five Test matches against Pakistan. They the first Test of this series by 74 runs in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan suffered defeat in the first Test of the series against England in Rawalpindi. It has been described as many as one of the best Test matches ever played.

On a very flat pitch England smashed their way to 657 runs batting first. Pakistan responded with 579 runs as Abdullah Shafique scored 114, Imam-ul-Haq 121 and Babar Azam 136 runs. In search of a win, England piled on 264 runs in under 36 overs to set Pakistan a target of 343 runs.

That was more than achievable for the hosts and although they looked on track to pull it off at one point, they capitulated on the final session. Ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan and Azhar Ali all scored 40s while Saud Shakeel top scored on 76 runs.

It was not enough as the hosts were all out for 268 runs, losing by 74 runs.

Pakistan have a settled lineup and although the bowlers struggled in the first Test, it was a very flat pitch. They may go in unchanged despite defeat.

England Form

England made a huge statement in the first Test by not only winning the match but the method in which they did it. Batting first, Ben Stokes charges scored the highest number of runs ever on day one of a Test match. They were eventually all for 657 runs off just 101 overs.

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook all scored 100+ runs. Pakistan responded in kind with 579 runs. The match looked to be heading towards a draw.

England were having none of that as they blasted their way to 264 off 36 overs. Zak Crawley scored 50, Joe Root 73 and Harry Brook 87 runs, all of them with a strike rate of over 100.

A very bold declaration followed, leaving Pakistan needing 343 to win. That opened the game up but England backed up their boldness, mainly thanks to Jimmy Anderson and Ollie Robinson whom took four wickets each.

After the incredible win in the first Test it is likely that England will remain unchanged. The batsmen cashed in on a flat pitch, but whether Multan will offer similar conditions remains to be seen.
