Pakistan vs South Africa Predictions

Pakistan have the edge in home conditions, especially from a batting perspective. Babar Azam showed signs of returning to his best in the 1st Test and could be a handful. I’m backing Pakistan to win with Azam to shine.

  • Pakistan’s Babar Azam has scored 100, 60, 102 & 143 runs in 4 of his last 6 Test innings at home.
  • Pakistan’s Azhar Ali has scored 93, 51 & 31 in his last 3 Test innings.
  • Pakistan have won 3 of their last 4 Test matches at home.
  • South Africa’s Dean Elgar has scored 50+ runs in 3 of his last 4 Test matches.
  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram scored 74 runs in his last Test innings.

Head to Head

South Africa have won four of their last six Test matches against Pakistan. In this first Test match of this series Pakistan won an entertaining match by seven wickets in Karachi.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan began this two-match Test series well against South Africa in Karachi with a seven wicket victory.

After losing the toss, the hosts bowled well to dismiss South Africa for 220 runs. Pakistan were then staring down the barrel at 27-4 but Azhar Ali (51), Fawad Alam (109) and Faheem Ashraf (64) took them to 378 runs.

The 158-run lead proved useful as South Africa fought hard but were eventually dismissed for 245 runs, leaving Pakistan with a chase of 89 runs.

They reached the total with seven wickets in hand as Babar Azam showed signs of returning to form with 30 runs.

Pakistan Injuries & Team News

Conditions will impact team selection greatly in the 2nd Test. It is unlikely that any of the batsmen will be dropped despite the failings of the two openers in the 1st Test.

It is in the bowling department where things could get interesting. Yasir Shah is a shoe-in for the spin bowler. Nauman Ali was the hero of the 1st Test but his place in the side could come into doubt if the conditions are not as spin friendly.

South Africa Form

South Africa will be bitterly disappointed with their performance in the 1st Test. On a few occasions they had Pakistan on the ropes but failed to keep the pressure on the hosts.

Batting first, South Africa could only score 220 runs, that after being 108-3. The total suddenly turned into a good one when the Proteas had Pakistan reeling at 27-4, but once again, the bowlers allowed the middle and lower order to score big.

The 158-run lead looked to have South Africa dead and buried in the match, but they fought back once again. Aiden Markram (74) and Rassie van der Dussen (64) steered the visitors to 175 runs which gave them a 17 run lead with only one wicket down.

Unfortunately, once one wicket fell the South Africans crumbled in Karachi to lose their last nine wickets for a paltry 70 runs. Pakistan chased down the 89 runs required for victory with seven wickets in hand.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

South Africa will be considering going with just one spinner but will need to see conditions first. Rawalpindi is the one pitch in Pakistan that normally favours the fast bowlers, however, there has been talk of it being dried out for this Test.

Another concern for South Africa is Dean Elgar. He was sent for x-rays after being hit on the arm whilst batting.

Should Elgar not be passed fit we could see a debut for Sarel Erwee at the top of the order.

Depending on conditions, Wiaan Mulder could come in for George Linde, but that call will only be made shortly before the start of play.
