South Africa vs Sri Lanka Predictions

Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar are backed to be among the runs again after a magnificent 1st Test. Faf du Plessis scored 199 runs and should back that up with another big score.

Sri Lanka’s bowling lineup were already average at best coming into the 1st Test, with injuries they are going to be a lot weaker. South Africa’s batsmen should have it all their own way in the 2nd Test.

  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram scored 68 runs in the 1st Test.
  • South Africa’s Dean Elgar scored 95 runs in the 1st Test.
  • South Africa’s Faf du Plessis top scored  with 199 runs in the 1st Test.
  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram has scored 149, 121, 113 & 75 runs in his last 4 domestic matches.
  • Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal top scored with 85 runs in the 1st Test.

Head to Head

Sri Lanka have won four of their last six Test matches against South Africa. In the 1st Test of the current series it was South Africa who won by an innings and 45 runs at Centurion.

South Africa Form

South Africa have an inexperienced squad for this series but can still put out a starting side that has plenty of quality.

The Proteas were under pressure in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka as the visitors dominated the first day of the match. The 396-run total by Sri Lanka put them in the pound seat but unfortunately they struggled on the bowling front.

Deal Elgar (95) and Aiden Markram (68) put on a 141-run opening partnership to put Sri Lanka under pressure. Faf du Plessis then scored 199, Temba Bavuma 71 and Keshav Maharaj 73 runs to take South Africa to a massive 621-run total.

Sri Lanka, struggling with injury to a number of players fought well in the second innings but were dismissed for 180 runs. That saw South Africa win by an innings and 41 runs.

Lutho Sipamla was impressive on debut for the hosts as he took six wickets in the match.

South Africa Injuries & Team News

South Africa’s star bowler, Kagiso Rabada returns to the squad for the 2nd Test but there is no guarantee he will start. They are looking to manage his workload and with a tour to Pakistan on the horizon, he may be left to bowl in the nets.

No other changes are expected unless late injury befalls the Proteas camp.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka will be heartened by their 1st Test performance after scoring 396 runs in the first innings. Only five sub-continent teams have scored 400+ in South Africa and four of those were by India.

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka they had a number of injuries during the match which cost them. Whilst batting Dhananjaya de Silva had to retire hurt on 79 runs. Dinesh Chandimal scored 85 with a 66 run contribution by Dasun Shanaka.

After losing de Silva, Kasun Rajitha went down after bowling just two overs. Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kamara also got injured while bowling.

With three bowlers down Sri Lanka never really had a chance of dismissing South Africa cheaply and the hosts ended up making 621.

What was a promising start to the series for Sri Lanka turned into a nightmare. They were suddenly faced with a 200+ deficit and two days to bat to save the Test.

Being a batsman down that was never going to happen. Still, Kusal Perera batted well for his 64, as did Wanindu Hasaranga for 59 runs in a 180-run total.

Sri Lanka Injuries & Team News

Mickey Arthur will be assessing his options after Sri Lanka suffered a number of injuries in the 1st Test.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Kasun Rajitha were ruled out of the 1st Test after picking up injuries and played no further part. Lahiru Kumara didn’t bowl again but he did come out to bat while Dinesh Chandimal batted with what seemed like a muscle strain.

Whether they will all be out for the 2nd Test remains to be seen. It is highly unlikely that they will all be fit, rumours suggest Rajitha and De Silva are definitely out while it isn’t looking good for Kumara.
