Sri Lanka vs England Predictions
The result could be determined by who wins the toss with batting first being exceptionally important. Sri Lanka shouldn’t be as poor as they were in the 1st Test so my focus is on the batsmen rather than the result.
- Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera has scored 60+ runs his last 3 Test matches.
- England’s Joe Root scored 228 runs in the last Test match.
- England’s Jonny Bairstow scored 47 & 35 not out in the 1st Test.
- England have won their last 4 Test matches in Sri Lanka.
Head to Head
England have won eight of their last 14 Test matches against Sri Lanka. There have been four draws and two Sri Lanka victories.
England won the 1st Test of this series by seven wickets in Galle.
Sri Lanka Form
Sri Lanka will be very disappointed with their performance in the 1st Test in Galle. Everything favoured them – they got a pitch full of turn and batted first after winning the toss.
That was where their luck ran out. Dinesh Chandimal top scored with 28 runs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for a horrific 135 runs in the first innings. England put on 421 runs to give themselves a massive lead.
Sri Lanka battled hard in the second innings, scoring 359 runs as Lahiru Thirimanne scored 111, Kusal Perera 62 and Angelo Mathews 71 runs. That only gave the hosts a 74-run lead though.
England were in trouble early on, losing their first three wickets for 14 runs but the visitors then cruised to win by seven wickets.
Sri Lanka Injuries & Team News
Captain and opening batsman, Dimuth Karunaratne has been released from the squad after not recovering in time from injury. He is joined by Kusal Mendis who has been dropped because of poor form.
Roshen Silva is Mendis’ most likely replacement. There is hope that seam bowler, Suranga Lakmal will be fit while Lahiru Kumara and Nuwan Pradeep have also been released.
Sri Lanka will only play one seam bowler and three spinners with the pitch expected to be very spin friendly.
England will be over the moon with their performance in the 1st Test. Dom Bess took career best figures of 5-30 as England restricted Sri Lanka to a paltry 135 runs in the first innings.
From there on Joe Root took control as he scored 228 runs. He was well supported by debutant, Dan Lawrence who scored 73. The 421 total put England in a commanding position.
England didn't find it as easy in Sri Lanka’s second innings but Jack Leach still managed to take 5-122, dismissing Sri Lanka for 359.
Chasing 74 runs for victory on a pitch that was turning square, England had early jitters. Zack Crawley, Dom Sibley and Joe Root were all back in the changing room with the score on 14. Jonny Bairstow and Dan Lawrence however saw England home to win by seven wickets.
England Injuries & Team News
England are reportedly looking at rotating their seam bowling options. James Anderson, Olly Stone and Chris Woakes look set to replace Stuart Broad, Sam Curran and Mark Wood.
Spinners Jack Leach and Dom Bess should continue with Moeen Ali not considered ready just yet.
On the batting side there shouldn’t be any changes.
