2019 Ashes Top Batsman Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Streaming

Joe Root is tasked to lead England in their attempt to reclaim the urn in the 2019 Ashes. Root averages 47.00 runs per innings in England against Australia.

Only Steven Smith can boast similar Ashes numbers from the current squads. In home conditions I think Root offers better value to be the Ashes top run scorer at 4.50.

Joe Root 2018/19 Test Form

Joe Root is one of the finest batsmen on the world stage at the moment, particularly in Test Match cricket. Since making his debut in 2012, Root averages 49.51 runs per innings which puts him among some of the best in the world.

2018 was not Joe Root’s best year in terms of run-scoring but it was his first full year of captaining England after Alastair Cook stepped down. His form did pick up as he got used to the captaincy and has now scored three centuries in his last seven test matches.

While Root’s average is not quite that of former Australia captain Steven Smith, there are other factors to consider. Most of his cricket has been played in England, a country not always conducive to scoring large numbers of runs.

Joe Root Ashes Form

This will be Joe Root’s fifth Ashes series and third in England. In all five he has made meaningful contributions. Root averages 47.00 in his two previous Ashes’ in England, while all three of his centuries in the Ashes have come in England along with three fifties.

A closer look at the figures and you realise that none of Root’s main contenders for the top batsman averages as much as he does in England.

Joe Root Batting Style

Joe Root is a right-hand who generally bats in the crucial number four position – a role most teams reserve for their best batsman. Many consider Root to be of the ‘old guard’ specifically for his old school technical qualities.

He is a strong off-side and leg-side player and while he prefers playing on the front foot, he is more than adept pulling and cutting off the back foot.

Other Contenders

David Warner

This will be David Warner’s first test series since the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town in March 2018 but his World Cup form showed that his class still remains. His record in England is not great though with an average of 37.06 and a high score of 85.

He can be backed at 6.00 but for me is a risky option.

Steven Smith

Steven Smith has the best test batting average among current players at 61.37. He, like Warner, is coming off a ban from the Cape Town saga. How it will affect Smith who has now lost the captaincy remains to be seen, but he cannot be discredited.

Steven Smith has a very similar average at 47.38 to Joe Root and is the second favourite to claim the top batsman award at 5.00.

Verdict

Joe Root is already a veteran of 80 test matches and averages 49.51 runs. I feel that home conditions should give him the edge over fellow contenders David Warner and Steven Smith.
