2019 Ashes Outright Winner Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

Cricket’s oldest rivalry returns between England and Australia as they battle it out to claim the urn in the 2019 Ashes. Neither side has been at their in test cricket over the last 18 months but Australia will be boosted by the return of David Warner and Steven Smith.

I think Australia can win the Ashes at odds against for the first time in England since 2001.

England Form & Team News

England head into the 2019 Ashes fresh from a maiden Cricket World Cup triumph but will their ODI form translate into test match form? Their test form heading into the Ashes isn’t exactly spectacular after struggling to overcome Ireland at Lord’s in an Ashes warm-up.

Granted the hosts were not at full strength but they were not far off it either. Furthermore, in January and February 2019 the West Indies defeated them 2-1 in a three match test series.

England are understandably riding a wave of optimism at the moment given their triumph over the world. At 1.90 the bookmakers have made them favourite to reclaim the Ashes on home soil. I feel those are very short odds for a team who lost to the West Indies in their last series and are some way off being a settled line-up.

There are struggles within this England side that have been papered over with optimism. Joe Root (7) is the only batsman in the English squad to be ranked within the top 25 batsmen in the world. He has also been tipped to be the Ashes top run-scorer.

Since the retirement of Alistair Cook, England have struggled to find an opening batting partnership. Up to eight players have been tried and failed, to varying disagrees. World Cup star Jason Roy made his test debut against Ireland and looks set to opening the batting alongside Rory Burns.

On the bowling front James Anderson is a class apart. He is ranked second in the world but at 37-years-old how much does he still have left. Anderson missed the test against Ireland as he was nursing an injury but he is likely to be fit for the first test. Considering he has a great record at home he'll be a popular choice to be England’s top bowler during the Ashes.

I don’t think England represents value at 1.90 but at 3.25 I think it is worth backing Root to be England’s top batsman.

Australia Form & Team News

Australia are in a far better place than they were 12 months ago. After the ball-tampering saga at Newlands in March 2018 Australian cricket hit rock bottom. They lost that series to South Africa and then lost 1-0 away to Pakistan and 2-1 at home to India. This was all without David Warner, Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft who were implicated and banned for ball-tampering.

Missing two of the world’s biggest stars would affect any team but they comfortably dealt with Sri Lanka in their last test series, winning it 2-0 at home.

One look at the two squads and immediately the Aussies look a more balanced outfit. Steven Smith, David Warner and Usman Khawaja all find themselves among the top 11 batsman in the world.

In the bowling department Australia look even better. Pat Cummins is ranked as the best bowler in the world and has been predicted to finish the Ashes as the top bowler. Alongside him is Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc, both ranked in the top 15 bowlers in the world.

Australia won the 2017/18 Ashes at home 4-0. Their last Ashes victory away from home came in the 2001 but I feel there is value in them against an unsettled England line-up. They can be backed to claim an outright series victory at 2.50.

  • Australia won the last Ashes series 4-0 in 2017/18.
  • Australia have Steven Smith and David Warner back in their test squad.

Verdict

Australia will be desperate to hold onto the Ashes after a very tough 12 months. Their two stars Steven Smith and David Warner are both back in the fold and will make the Aussies stronger. I am tipping Australia to win the Ashes outright at 2.50.
