England vs Australia 2nd Ashes Test Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

England will be desperate to hit back in the second Ashes test at Lord’s against Australia after losing the first. Joe Root will need to be the catalyst for an improved England batting effort and with his good record at Lord’s it is not beyond him.

After his two centuries Steven Smith has to be backed again, while Australia are more than capable of winning at Lord’s as they did on their previous visit in 2015.

England Form & Team News

England were all over Australia on day one of the first Ashes test at Edgbaston but let them off the hook at 122-8 and paid the price. After bowling the Aussies out for 284 runs, Rory Burns scored 133 and Joe Root 57 runs as England built a healthy 90-run lead.

The English bowlers were unproductive in the Australian's second innings and couldn’t restrict the Aussies. The visitors declared on 487 leaving England needing 377 runs for victory.

They only managed 147 with Nathan Lyon taking 6-49, losing by 251 runs. James Anderson will miss the second test with Jofra Archer favourite to replace him.

Joe Root averages 51.08 at Lord’s and has three scores in excess of 150 runs at the ground. I am tipping him to be England’s best first innings batsman at 3.60.

England can be backed at 2.30 to claim victory but Lord's isn’t historically their best venue. They also struggled against Ireland at Lord’s prior to the Ashes. A draw will pay 5.50.

Australia Form & Team News

Australia head into the second Ashes test at the iconic Lord’s with confidence after taking a 1-0 series lead at Edgbaston. Former captain Steven Smith played two of the great Ashes innings' to pull Australia to the brink of victory.

Batting first Australia recovered from 122-8 to post a 284 run total thanks to a magnificent 144 runs from Steven Smith. England still managed a first innings 90-run lead as Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took three wickets apiece.

Steven Smith was at it again in the second innings with 142 runs as Australia declared at 487-7, setting England a mammoth 4th innings chase of 377 runs. England capitulated for 146 runs with Lyon taking 6-49.

Smith’s incredible form deserves to be backed. To add to that he scored 215 and 58 runs on his last visit to Lord’s. There is value in Smith to score a century in the match at 3.00.

Australia won at Lord’s on their last visit in 2015 and are full of confidence after the first test victory. I think they are good value at 2.25 to claim a 2-0 lead in the Ashes.

England vs Australia Head to Head

Australia are currently the Ashes holders after winning the last Ashes series 4-0. After winning the first test of this Ashes series by 251 runs at Edgbaston they the Aussies are in a good position to defend that title.

England vs Australia Match Up

As shown in the first test at Edgbaston these teams are pretty evenly matched with Steve Smith’s individual brilliance proving the difference. The one area in which Australia have a massive edge over their hosts is in the spin bowling department.

Nathan Lyon decimated the England batting line-up while Moeen Ali had little effect. England will hope that the Lord’s pitch offers less help to the spinners for this encounter.

Post bet analysis

In a test match that could have gone either way it was the Aussies who were holding on late on day five. The match lost numerous overs due to the rain which allowed the draw to come into it. The tip on Steve Smith lost but I don't think it was a bad one. He was well on his way to another century before Jofra Archer floored him with a vicious bouncer. He came out to bat again but fell eight runs short of his ton.
Joe Root looked terrible at the crease in both innings and might think twice before backing him again...unless he can find some form.
