England vs Australia 5th Ashes Test Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

The Oval is the venue for the fifth and final 2019 Ashes Test match as a distraught England search for pride after Australia retained the urn. Australia's Steven Smith is in imperious form and just cannot be ignored while Marnus Labuschagne is backed to score 50+ runs.

England Form & Team News

The disappointment around the England camp is evident as Australia held onto the Ashes. The Poms will want to prove themselves and end the series on a high after a number of terrible performances.

They have not managed to find a way to get Steven Smith out but their bowling have otherwise performed adequately. It is in the batting department that they have failed miserably. Star player and captain Joe Root continues to disappoint although he did score 71 runs in the previous Test at Old Trafford.

England allowed Australia to dominate the fourth Test from start to finish. In their first innings after Australia scored 497 runs the hosts were in a good position at 165-2, but another collapse ensued as they were dismissed for 301 runs.

Jofra Archer took 3-45 in Australia’s second innings but the damage was done. Chasing a total of 382 on a wearing pitch was never going to happen. They needed to bat time and they almost did but Australia took the final wicket with 13 overs to spare on the final day.

England can be backed at 2.50 to win the final Test and draw the series but can they come back from this disappointment? I wouldn’t bet on it.

Australia Form & Team News

After the incredible third Ashes Test many thought momentum would be with England, but Australia won the fourth Test by 185 runs and in so doing keep hold of the famous urn.

Batting first at Old Trafford Australia pummeled 497-8 declared. Steven Smith marked his return after missing the third Test through injury with an incredible 211 runs. Marnus Labuschagne ably supported him with 67 runs.

Josh Hazelwood took 4-67 as England were dismissed for 301 runs. Steven Smith was at it again in the second innings scoring 82 runs before the visitors declared on 186-6, leaving England with a chase of 382 runs on a difficult pitch. Pat Cummins ensured there were no more heroics from the Poms as he took 4-33.

Steven Smith has an incredible average of 134.2 runs per innings in his five innings in this series. It’s difficult to look past him scoring another century in the match at 2.50 after scoring 211 and 82 runs last time out.

Marnus Labuschagne came in as a substitute for Smith in the second Test and has retained his place with three 50+ scores. He is tipped to surpass 50 runs again in this test at 2.00.

Momentum is with the Aussies and they will want an outright series victory. Based on recent form they are excellent value at 2.05 to win the fifth and final test.

England vs Australia Head to Head

England have only managed one Test victory over Australia in their previous nine encounters. Their last Test was won by Australia by 185 and in that, they retained the Ashes.

The hosts will be demoralised and bouncing back will be a tough ask. Australia on the other hand are primed to take advantage of a faltering English side.

England vs Australia Match Up

Initially Steven Smith was the major difference between the two sides but as the series has progressed the Australian bowlers have also started to dominate. Too many of the hosts’ batsmen are woefully out of form, this will need a drastic change if they are to compete and level the series at The Oval.

England vs Australia Key Statistics

  • Australia’s Steven Smith averages 134.2 in 3 Tests in the 2019 Ashes.
  • Australia’s Steven Smith scored 211 and 82 runs in his last Test match.
  • Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has scored 50+ in 3 of his last 4 innings.
  • Australia have won 6 of the last 9 Test matches against England (home & away).

It's difficult to see England recovering from a soul destroying loss at Old Trafford. My best bet is for Australia to win the Test, Steven Smith to score a century and Marnus Labuschagne to score 50+ runs.

Post bet analysis

Marnus Labuschagne fell for 48 runs in Australia's first innings as the visitors struggled to match England's first inning batting effort. Steven Smith came close to another ton but fell for 80 runs. Unlucky on both fronts. England were however on top for most of the game and deservedly won the match to draw level in the series.
