Tournament favourite, Michael van Gerwen enters his quarter-final of the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship on Monday as the long odds-on favourite to beat Scott Williams.

It's been five years since Michael van Gerwen last lifted the Sid Waddell trophy, but the world number two seems hell-bent on ending that drought. "Mighty Mike" is yet to drop a set so far in these World Championships, cruising past Simon Whitlock, Richard Veenstra and Stephen Bunting.

Despite beating the in-form Bunting 4-0, van Gerwen won't have been too pleased with his overall performance. The three-time World Champion still managed to average just under 100, despite clearly not producing his A-game - an ominous sign for his quarter-final opponent.

Having shown plenty of promise throughout his career, Scott Williams is finally showing everyone what he can do on the big stage. "Shaggy" saw off Haruki Muramatsu, Danny Noppert and Martin Schindler in the early rounds, before sealing his first Quarter-Final appearance with a 4-1 victory over Damon Heta.

Williams took advantage of a poor performance from Heta, who missed a hatful of chances to make the scoreline more respectable. The Australian may have been put off by Williams's antics on stage, as he paused to stoke up the crowd a couple of times, including before the final dart of a memorable 170 finish.

Verdict

Michael van Gerwen v Scott Williams

Scott Williams has done well to make it to his first Quarter-Final, especially as he's yet to scale a 95 average in any of his four matches.

Michael van Gerwen won't be losing any sleep at all over that performance. The tournament favourite has only lost one of his previous nine Quarter-Finals on the Ally Pally stage, and it took a 107 average for Dave Chisnall to prevail on that occasion.

I'm expecting van Gerwen to play well and win fairly comfortably. Backing van Gerwen -2.5 in the handicap market could prove profitable.
