The 2020 PDC World Matchplay is taking place from 18-26 July 2020 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. It is the 27th edition of the tournament which is considered the second biggest PDC tournament behind the PDC World Championship.

There are 32 players competing in the PDC World Matchplay including the top 16 players on the PDC Order of Merit and top 16 players on the ProTour Order of Merit.

All of the top darts players are competing including Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price, Nathan Aspinall, Gary Anderson, Michael Smith, Rob Cross, Glen Durrant, Dave Chisnall, Daryl Gurney and James Wade.

PDC World Matchplay 2020 Betting Tips


Let's take a look a the main contenders in the 2020 PDC World Matchplay.

Michael van Gerwen (2.62)


World number one Michael van Gerwen won the UK Open in March. He competed in the PDC Summer Series where he won two of the first three Players Championship events.

Van Gerwen beat Peter Wright 8-7 in the Players Championship 9 final and Jose de Sousa 8-3 in the Players Championship 11 final. He was knocked out in the first, second and third rounds in each of the other three events.

Michael van Gerwen won the 2015 and 2016 PDC World Matchplay tournaments. He fell to Phil Taylor in the 2017 quarter-finals before suffering a first round defeat to Jeffrey de Zwaan in 2018 and second round defeat to Glen Durrant in 2019.

Van Gerwen has drawn Brendan Dolan in the first round.

Peter Wright (6.50)


Peter Wright beat Michael van Gerwen in the PDC World Championship final in January. The Scot competed in the PDC Summer Series, going down to Van Gerwen 8-7 in the Players Championship 9 final.

The World Champion won the Players Championship 13 event after defeating Gerwyn Price 8-2 in the final. Wright topped the final Summer Series Order of Merit after his victory on Day Five.

Peter Wright lost to Phil Taylor in the 2017 PDC World Matchplay final and Mensur Suljović In the 2018 PDC World Matchplay semi-finals. He reached the quarter-finals last year where he was knocked out by Daryl Gurney.

Peter Wright takes on Jose de Sousa in the first round who is making history as the first Portugese player to compete in the event.

Gerwyn Price (7.50)


World number three Gerwyn Price reached the UK Open final in March where he fell 11-9 to Michael van Gerwen. He competed in the PDC Summer Series where failed to get past the fourth round in the first four Players Championship events.

He bounced back well in the Players Championship 13 event by beating William O'Connor, Darius Labanauskas, Jose de Sousa, James Wade and Devon Petersen before a 8-2 defeat to Peter Wright in the final.

Gerwyn Price has lost in the first round in the last three PDC World Matchplay tournaments. The Welshman has drawn Dutchman Danny Noppert in the first round.

Nathan Aspinall (11.00)


Nathan Aspinall lost 10-8 against Michael van Gerwen in the UK Open first round. The World number six bounced back by winning the Players Championship 7 event and won the PDC Home Tour.

Aspinall competed in the PDC Summer Series, his best result was reaching the semi-finals in the Players Championship 10 event where he fell 7-5 to Dave Chisnall.

Nathan Aspinall competed in the 2019 PDC World Matchplay, knocked out in the first round 10-5 by Mervyn King.

Gary Anderson (13.00)


Gary Anderson reached the UK Open round of 16 but has been in poor form since. His best result in the PDC Summer Series was a 7-3 semi-final defeat to Ryan Joyce in the Players Championship 10 event.

He failed to get past the second round in the other four events. The Scot won the 2018 World Matchplay with a 21-19 victory against Mensur Suljović in the final.

Anderson was knocked out by Mervyn King in the second round in 2019. He faces Justin Pipe in the first round.

Michael Smith (21.00)


Michael Smith was knocked out by Rob Cross in the UK Open round of 32. His best result in the PDC Summer Series was a 6-0 quarter-final defeat to James Wade in the Players Championship 12 event.

The World number five failed to get past the third round in the other four events. Smith reached the 2019 PDC World Matchplay final where he lost 18-13 to Rob Cross.

Rob Cross (21.00)


Rob Cross was knocked out by Michael van Gerwen in the UK Open quarter-finals. The World number five played in the PDC Summer Series, reaching the Players Championship 12 final where he went down 8-2 to James Wade.

2018 World Champion Cross is the defending PDC World Matchplay champion having defeated Michael Smith in the 2019 final. He beat Chris Dobey, Krzysztof Ratajski, Stephen Bunting and Daryl Gurney on his way to the final.

He will open his title defence against German debutant Gabriel Clemens, the 2019 German Darts Masters finalist.
