The 2021 PDC World Matchplay Darts returns to the Winter Gardens' stage at Blackpool on Saturday, having been played out behind closed doors 12 months ago. Phil Taylor made this major his own during his illustrious career, and daily crowds of 2,000 fans will look on as the world's finest players look to join "The Power" on the Matchplay roll of honour.

We've taken a look through the odds and the draw for this year's Matchplay and come up with two classy players to back.

2021 World Matchplay Darts Tip 1

DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH lifted the Phil Taylor trophy in 2020, defeating Gary Anderson in the final. The young Belgian went into last year's event as the 11th unseeded qualifier. A first-round win over Nathan Aspinal was followed by victories over Joe Cullen, Adrian Lewis and Glen Durrant, before van den Bergh sealed his first major victory with an 18-10 win over the Flying Scotsman.

After recovering quickly from knee surgery, the defending champion brings some excellent form with him back to the Matchplay. Van den Bergh won his first Players Championship event in April, lost to Stephen Bunting in the final of Players Championship 17 and reached the semi-final of PC19, where he was defeated by Brendan Dolan.

Van den Bergh could come up against World Champion Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals, should both come through the earlier rounds unscathed. Price, however, hasn't been as consistent as the Belgian this season, and if van den Bergh can leap over that giant speed bump, then he has an excellent chance of defending his Matchplay crown.

Michael van Gerwen and third-favourite for the tournament, Jose De Sousa are the names that stand out in the bottom half of the draw. The man who brings winning form with him to Blackpool, though, is PETER WRIGHT and I think the former World Champion offers excellent value at his current price.

Snakebite thrashed Michael Van Gerwen to win PC20 last week, averaging a whopping 109 during that 8-2 hammering. Following that match, Wright said he was in love with his new darts - a statement we've heard on a number of occasions - before then proclaiming he'd win both the Matchplay and the 2022 World Championships.

Since losing to Phil Taylor in the 2017 final, Wright hasn't got past the quarter-finals at Blackpool. However, we know Wright is capable of dismantling anyone in the game when his tail's up and the number two seed brings plenty of momentum with him to the Winter Gardens.

Verdict

Peter Wright will be high on confidence after his recent Pro Tour win, and he looks a cracking straight win bet at 8/1.

Defending champion, Dimitri van den Bergh is another whose shown solid form on the circuit during 2021, and he offers plenty of each-way value at 12s with Betfred.
