The World Grand Prix Darts began in 1998 in Ireland. The first two events – 1998 & 1999 – took place in Rochester, Kent before moving to the Crosbie Cedars Hotel in Rosslare for one year in 2000.

2001 saw another venue change as it moved to Dublin’s Citywest arena.  It remained there until 2009 when it moved to the Reception Hall at the Citywest Hotel and Convention Centre. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was moved to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry where it was played behind closed doors.

The World Grand Prix Darts have had a number of sponsors. Bookmaker PaddyPower sponsored it from 2001 to 2003 before Sky Bet took over in 2004. Sky Poker took over for 2008.

Online bookmaker Bodog became the title sponsor in 2010 before PartyPoker.com took over in 2011. In 2016, Unibet came on board with BoyleSports becoming the headline sponsor in 2019.
