CDL Championship 2023 Predictions

Call of Duty League (CDL) Championship 2023 is the final event of the 2023 Call of Duty season, set to take place in Las Vegas on June 15-18. The tournament will welcome the best-performing eight teams from the 2023 season, which includes seven returning squads from 2022 and Minnesota RØKKR, who have qualified for CDL Champs for the first time since 2021.

Dangerous Outsiders

CDL Championship 2023 will be played in one stage, with all eight teams drawn into a double-elimination bracket based on their regular-season placement. All games will be played as best-of-five (Bo5), except for the Grand Finals, which will be best-of-nine (Bo9).

This year’s CDL Champs promises to be even more competitive than the previous iteration, with five teams priced as realistic candidates to hoist the coveted trophy. However, while CDL Championship 2023 will feature many excellent teams, all eyes will be on Atlanta FaZe, who are priced as the main favourites to go all the way and cement their status as the most successful team in CDL history.

But are FaZe Clan as strong as the latest odds suggest, or will we see one of the underdogs cause an upset?

CDL Championship 2023 Odds

According to the latest CDL Championship 2023 betting odds, FaZe Clan are the main favourites to win the tournament, priced at 3.00 on the outright betting markets. Toronto Ultra and OpTic Texas are close behind at 4.50, with New York Subliners at 5.50 and Los Angeles Thieves priced at 6.00.

Behind the leading five, we have Boston Breach, who enter CDL Championship 2023 as 26.00 underdogs, ahead of Seattle Surge (34.00) and Minnesota RØKKR, who travel to Las Vegas as the complete outsiders, priced at 51.00.

It’s hard to argue with bookmakers pricing RØKKR, Surge, and the Breach as the outsiders, but at the top of the list, things could get a bit messier, as it’s hard to say that Atlanta FaZe are undeniably stronger than any of the other four candidates to win CDL Championship 2023.

So who will it be, if not Atlanta FaZe?

Atlanta FaZe are the main favourites to win CDL Champs 2023, which sounds right. They were the most consistent team of the 2023 CDL season, which earned them the regular-season title with 385 points, 65 ahead of runners-up OpTic Texas.

However, while FaZe Clan have shown the most this season, they’ve also not won a Major since CDL Major 2 in February. FaZe placed third in CDL Major 3 and Major 4 and finished CDL Major 5 in second place. That’s still very impressive since finishing top three in every Major of the season isn’t a small feat; however, it’s hard to look past the fact that FaZe have won just one Major title, meaning they were beaten by one of the other CDL Champs title candidates in the last three Majors.

OpTic Texas are priced as the second-favourites to win CDL Championship 2023, which sounds fair, but they could’ve easily been the top favourites. OpTic looked incredible from Match to May, with two second-place finishes at CDL Major 3 and CDL Major 4; however, it all came crashing down in CDL Major 5.

Despite winning the qualifiers, OpTic crashed out of the CDL Major 5 in ninth-12th place, with a 0-3 defeat against the defending champions, Los Angeles Thieves. Losing against the Thieves isn’t that concerning, but seeing OpTic go from the hottest team in the league to exit a Major in the first round brings up some questions.

Seeing OpTic go up and down with their results isn’t anything new. This is a very good team, filled with exceptional talent, but OpTic are also very streaky – they’ll either start the tournament strong and produce a deep run or fall apart early. And teams like that aren’t the most inviting to bet on since you never know what to expect of them.

Toronto Ultra are priced at the same odds as OpTic Texas on the CDL Champs 2023 outright betting markets, which also makes sense. Ultra have won one Major (CDL Major 3) this season and had a couple of iffy showings in CDL Major 2 and Major 4 (fifth-sixth), but were top four in the remaining two Majors, including fourth in Major 5.

Toronto Ultra are one of the teams that are good but not great and have beaten other top contenders before. However, Ultra have not shown the form needed to win CDL Champs, so unless they find a way to improve ahead of their trip to Las Vegas, Toronto Ultra will likely secure a good placement but struggle to make it all the way.

Dangerous Outsiders

All of the top three favourites to win CDL Championship 2023 have the potential to make it to the end and hoist the trophy, but they all come with a question mark. OpTic Texas can be hit-or-miss, Toronto Ultra are good but not great, whereas Atlanta FaZe were technically the most successful team of the season, yet they’ve won just one Major, way back in February.

On the topic of the Major titles won, we have to turn to New York Subliners, who are the only team to win two CDL Majors this season. Admittedly, the Subliners have looked mediocre for most of the season and haven’t shown much for five months, but they won the first and last Major, which should earn them some attention.

Even their road at the CDL Champs isn’t that tough. The Subliners will first play against Minnesota RØKKR, who should fall easily, and they’ll likely play OpTic in the second round. This match could be tricky, but only if OpTic find traction early, and even then, New York Subliners should have a good chance to reach the next round.

Assuming Atlanta FaZe perform as well as expected, they should be New York Subliners’ winner final opponent. We recently saw a match between these two squads in CDL Major 5 finals when New York Subliners won on map seven (4-3), so they should do well in that matchup as well.

This season, New York Subliners and FaZe have played a few very close games this year, so if they happen to meet (which looks highly likely), there's a 50/50 chance the Subliners win and make it to the finals. So, all things considered, New York Subliners have a very straightforward road to the CDL Championship 2023 finals and considering the form they’ve shown, it’s not too crazy to believe they can make it there.

Verdict

CDL Championship 2023

Atlanta FaZe are in my book, a bit overhyped. Although they’ve looked good this season, FaZe have also struggled to win more than one CDL Major, so they’re not as invincible as it may seem. They should beat Toronto Ultra and OpTic Texas if they happen to meet, but New York Subliners (and even LA Thieves) will prove tougher to defeat.

FaZe have an excellent chance to win their second CDL trophy, but at the offered odds, betting on the New York Subliners makes more sense. They’re in excellent form, and have already shown that they can defeat Atlanta FaZe, and with OpTic struggling, this is a perfect chance for the Subliners to make it happen!
